Running Head CROSSCULTURAL COMMUNICATION CrossCultural Communication Guy Hall BUS 600 Dr Bob Miller December 14 2009 In this paper I will focus on the core of cultural communication in the workplace what it consists of and how in any given setting potential problems can be solved Whether it is in the workplace or in our personal lives we all have an inner list of those we still don39t comprehend let alone appreciate We all have biases even prejudices toward certain groups Fears usually include being judged miscommunication and patronizing or hurting others unintentionally hope are usually the likelihood of dialogue learning something new developing friendships and understanding dissimilar points of view At any moment that we39re dealing with people unlike from ourselves the probability is that they carry a similar list of hopes and fears with them Cultural expansion in the twentyfirst century has heightened the importance on interpersonal communication in an intercultural venue In an online article a writer stated Culture as a set of values and beliefs has become a constitutive component of effective social work practice in a multicultural reality Yan 2008 This means as our world grows expands and becomes increasingly more interconnected by various technological advances the need for effective interpersonal communication among differing cultures has become rather clear As a result of the advancement of technology in today39s world a world in which some businesspeople are involved in transactions with other businesspeople in distant countries the call for comprehension of intercultural communication within this setting has become a certainty Some people wonder why the study of intercultural communication is relevant in our daily lives Intercultural communication is a very significant issue It teaches us how to deal with differences Culture is a very critical thing in a person s life It is the individuality of a human being and a set of main beliefs and values that a person follows Furthermore we have to respect a person based on what we support others preferred selfperception Intercultural communication is a topic that is not usually taught in middle and high school Lecturers think that a person develops the verbal communication but the even if a person learns to correspond effectively they lack intercultural communication Reason why is for the reason that they have never be exposed to different cultures Interpersonal communication is a form of communication that involves a small number of people who can work together solely with one another and who therefore have the ability to both become accustomed to their messages purposely for those others and to acquire unexpected understandings from them To an extent all communication could be called interpersonal as it occurs between two or more people Nevertheless unlike other forms of communication interpersonal communication involves persontoperson interactions As well the awareness that a social acquaintance has developed between the intermingling persons however vague and shortterm it may seem is also much more likely Cultural communication does indeed make a very significant difference in the workplace and there are many signs that show this Organizations that do not do business internationally can afford to be monocultural But this is the age of globalization and businesses are required to look for newer avenues to enhance their revenue services So communicating with people from diverse cultures becomes imperative The management communication must be proficient to effectively communicate with people belonging to different cultures In an online article Aydin stated organizations are strong social tools to arrange the relationships between the individuals and they are also goal directed boundary maintaining and socially constructed systems of human activity which focuses attention on the social processes involved in the genesis and persistence of organizations When an individual wants to achieve his goals which require more power than he has he must cooperate with others Aydin 2009 This statement allows us to deduce that organizations are able to please the individual needs of employees to assure that a diversified workplace is not a problem in the workplace The essential nature of each culture must be quickly grasped as culture is a deciding aspect in shaping up the customeremployee behavior and other business relationships Situations where cultural communication problems must be addressed can be done in many ways to prevent future repercussions To succeed in nurturing efficient crosscultural ties the administrator of an organization and each member must try to learn about the culture of the various people that they are dealing with Free and readily accessible online resources can prove to be of great help Literature on intercultural communication can help to take this learning to an academic level It would beneficial for a person to be afforded the chance to travel to their country to acquire a personal experience Communication between two people comes down to their respective individualities more than anything else so people should focus more on the human factor and solutions shall follow In an online article called Culture and Communication the main writer stated Advances in communication technologies have made great progress in bridging time and distance but social and cultural differences are still formidable obstacles to effective communication Communication processes occur in specific cultural contexts with unique normative beliefs assumptions and shared symbols Leonard 2009 We all communicate with others all the time in places such as our homes in our workplaces in the groups we belong to and in society No matter how well we think we empathize each other communication is difficult Our culture in uences how we approach problems and how we participate in society When we participate in diversified group settings we are often surprised at how differently people move toward their work simultaneously In Leonard s writings he continued to stated Culture in uences what people communicate to whom they communicate and how they communicate There has been little systematic crosscultural research to explicate the effects of communication media on communication effectiveness Leonard 2009 In turn this simply says that regardless of what backgrounds some may have the way he or she communicates will differ from time to time and it will always remain a difficult task to ameliorate any communication problem Many different groups of people such businesspeople families and students could benefit from increased awareness and training in the field of interpersonal communication among varying cultures In an article on cross cultural social work Yan stated As inspired by cultural studies social work literature has gradually recognized the multicultural nature of individuals each person not only carries many sets of culture but also is situated in different social locations the culture of which may not be coherent to the cultures that she or he carries Yan 2008 Same is true with the predicament of race relations furthermore considerable numbers could reduce the amount of tension awkwardness insult and even physical violence if organizations would educate their employees or students in how to better communicate with those that happen to be a member of a distinctive cultural background References Aydin B amp Ceylan A 2009 THE ROLE OF
