Con ict Resolution Running Head CONFLICT RESOLUTION Con ict Resolution Guy Hall BUS 610 Professor Kathryn KingMetters February 1 2010 Con ict Resolution In this paper I will discuss the broad area of con ict resolution and how it relates to teambuilding exercises primarily in the workplace of a typical organization In regards to the workplace con ict resolution is a variety of methods for alleviating or eliminating sources of con ict The term is sometimes used interchangeably with the term dispute resolution or alternative dispute resolution Processes of con ict resolution generally include negotiation mediation and diplomacy Con ict resolution is any lessening in the severity of a con ict It may require con ict management in which the parties continue the con ict but take on less extreme tactics resolution in which they reach agreement on enough issues that the con ict stops or removal of the underlying causes of the con ict In the text the author stated Formal con ict resolution and grievance programs are helpful Overly political people should not be hired and employees who get results without playing political games should be publicly recognized and rewarded Kinicki p34l2009 In team building you will hear people say that con ict is good for teams and so they encourage it According to an article online about team building the author stated The most important principle for building a successful and productive team is the development of trust among the team players No team can build on any higher tasks without first establishing a sense of trust among all the team members Trust is the first and foremost component that must be established for a successful team Garavaglia 2010 To the contrary I have realized that con ict has an emotional component that tends to be destructive whereas disagreement is a nonemotional presentation of 2 Con ict Resolution differing viewpoints The words con ict resolution has probably come up a lot in a person s life but what exactly is con ict resolution To answer this con ict resolution is generally the way of resolving an argument or disagreement between two groups using methods that are nonviolent to come to an agreement between the two parties Professional business objectives require intellectual practical and administrative approaches to achieving goals Therefore many business decisions and operations benefit from contribution by team members whose efforts and knowledge are dedicated to specific areas In many respects con ict is beneficial because it allows the group to consider wider perspectives than normally available to each member of the group individually In the business environment effective con ict resolution strategies are necessary to minimize any disruptive or destructive effects caused by con ict within the team and in an online article the author agrees stating All interactions present a potential for con ict Differences in perceptions values beliefs and behaviors can lead to strife and contention Ineffective communication usually leads to discord Lastly leadership and organizational style can result in discord and controversy In nursing the causes of con ict are many and diverse Garavaglia 2010 Team building is essential towards mission accomplishment and achieving ones goal for an organization According to the text the author elaborated on the root of team building and stated Team building is a catchall term for a host of techniques aimed at improving the internal functioning of work groups Whether conducted by company trainers or hired consultants and done onsite or offsite teambuilding workshops strive for greater cooperation better communication and less dysfunctional con ict 3 Con ict Resolution Kinicki p233 2009 A much greater focus should be put on how work groups accomplish the job rather than on individual emphasis to determine progress Most managers plan one or two events per year and that is it There is rarely any regular training or followup and this can hold back the group39s longterm achievement Effective team building needs to happen continuously if you want your group to be successful If you lead a group aim to incorporate teambuilding exercises into your weekly or monthly routine This will help everyone address their different issues and it will give them a chance to build cohesion and learn to trust one another more than just once or twice a year According to an online study of team building techniques the author eloquently stated Reasonably stable teams perform better because members develop familiarity with one another and with their collective task so they can quickly settle in and get to work rather than waste time and energy getting oriented They learn who is especially knowledgeable or skilled in different aspects of the work and how to deal with members who are less skilled without excessively disrupting the team39s progress Hackman 2002 Ultimately make sure that your teambuilding exercises are not competitive Competition can make one person or team work against another This probably is not a good way to build team spirit and unity Many companies use sports for teambuilding activities I really enjoy playing tennis and volleyball and if incorporated into the workplace employees are likely to engage as to get away from the daily burden of daily office tasks Nevertheless these activities can do far more harm than good if they focus just on competing In an online article regarding a group issue in the workplace an author 4 Con ict Resolution very intellectually stated Anytime you have more than one person involved there is the potential for a personality clash Understand that these events will happen nothing can be done to make them all go away However you can be prepared and can practice Taking the correct actions will keep small problems small Marinucci 2009 Thus relating that organizations should plan an event that makes people truly depends on others to succeed and stay away from competition and winning In conclusion to sustain an organization s team building efforts and to assure they are effective leaders must first identify the issues their group is facing Then they can plan activities to address these challenges straightforwardly and make sure that the team will actually acquire some benefits from the event Keep competition out of the exercises and aim to make teambuilding part of the daily corporate culture instead of a onceayear event In an online article the author stated The importance of the team in any organization is essential for a productive working environment This is no different for the longterm care environment in which numerous areas of specialty contribute to the successful functioning of a nursing home Garavaglia 2010 Con ict resolution is a key part to assuring this teambuilding effort is effectively carried through and all employees participate to achieve an organizational success 5 Con ict Resolution References Garavaglia B 2010 February Three principles for organizational team building Billing Alert for Long Term Care 122 1112 Retrieved January 29 2010 from ProQuest
