Criminal justice workers such as police and correctional officers judges and attorneys are commonly held to a specific standard of values What are those values Why are they held to these values Should they be held to a certain set of values There are many ethics and values associated with criminal justice professionals as outlined in the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics Some of these ethics and values are as follows I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all and will behave in a manner that does not bring discredit to me or my agency I will never act unofficially or permit personal feelings prejudices political beliefsto in uence my decisions I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith and i accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the values of police service I know that I alone am responsible for upholding these values and professional standards MPOETC 2010 Criminal justice professional are held to these standards as a public trust that is vested upon them Police officer are the only people who have the right to restrict someone39s freedom of movement and other rights that are afforded to us in the Constitution of the United States I personally do not believe that criminal justice professionals should be held to any higher standard than those we serve or those who are in charge of us Police officers make mistakes both on and off duty that can always be questioned by the community and police administrators So why should they not be afforded the same opportunity as anyone else to some type of rehabilitative justice If a police officer lies under oath their career is over and maybe it should be However if the President of the United States lies under oath nothing happens I fail to see the fairness of this If a congressman is convicted of theft they keep their pension If a police officer commits a theft he loses his pension Both of these crimes are moral turpitude crimes involving public officials I am not advocating for rogue cops running around a city near you that are not held accountable for their actions What I am advocating is lets hold our elected officials to the same standard as criminal justice professionals Scott Cornelious Law Enforcement Code of Ethics MPOETC Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission Pennsylvania 2010 Response 2 Criminal justice workers such as the police correctional officer s judges and attorneys are held to a higher and more specific standard of values Individuals who work in the criminal justice system are expected not hoping to but expected to have values such as professionalism at all times ethics at all times be responsible at all times and be a roll model citizen at all times Unlike other jobs this does not just mean we have to have these values while on duty or at work but we must have these values outside of the uniform or suit If I work at WalMart and I conduct myself in an unprofessional manner they will have grounds to discipline me However ifI get arrested for driving reckless the walmart management staff probably won t if know and if they do find out nothing will happen do to the nature of the crime As a police officer if I get arrested for anything whether it be reckless driving DUI or if I am just involved in a domestic issue that my not be directly related to me I can be suspended for a year which would take me off the road I can also get in trouble for getting a traffic ticket which will result in a write up Also I can only speak on behalf of the police department that I work for which expects us to conduct ourselfs in the highest manner at all times which I agree with We are held to a double standard because we enforce the law which makes sense to a certain point If I am arresting individuals for drinking while under the in uence of drugs or alcoholic beverages and I get arrested for DUI then I deserve the harsher punishment because I know better With that said I do not think it is right for the public or media to always mention our profession the minute we are accused of breaking a law Every person that gets a DUI or is involved in a police manner is not put on the news If you are an officer corrections officers or work in the court system no matter what the reason your name is going across that TV As I stated before individuals who work in the criminal justice system should be held to a higher standard but should not be treated differently by the media or public because we made a mistake We are human and are capable of making mistakes and with our profession comes a lot of pressure due to every move of ours being watched and dissected
