Week 3 D0 1 Due Day 2 Main Forum Please post your response to the following discussion question by clicking on Reply Describe a community in your city or state that currently exemplifies the concept of social disorganization What solutions might you implement to revitalize that community A community that exemplifies the concept of social disorganization within Saint Louis Missouri is the city of Saint Louis The city has become filled with crime because of gangs drug dealers and users just to name a few Houses that were once beautiful places to live have become condemned and an eye sore Drug dealers here use these vacant houses to sell drugs and continuously increase the already high crime rateGang violence continues to kill our youth mostly the African American raceThe city was a very peaceful place to live until about a decade ago now it isn39t safe to leave your car in front of your house due to the high theft and robbery rate or car accidents hit and runsl would implement more community based programs and education on working toward deterring crime Revitalization starts with the people of the community so if I could educate and get the people in my community more involved in restoring and changing our community for the best we could eliminate or reduce the crime here I would also look into funding more drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs to help those individuals who have became victims of drug and alcohol abuse because it is my belief that the more people who are involved in reforming our community the better and there is not anyone better to raise the awareness of change in the community than an exdrug user drug dealer or criminal that has changed their ways Response 2 Hawthorne California has become a disorganized community In the early 90 s Hawthorne was where the upper to middle class people lived You could walk down to the corner store and people would stop and say hello to one another Neighbors were neighborly and looked out for one another You don t have to worry about getting shoot or asked What gang are you from by the local gang members Awwwh those were the good old days Now every night helicopters y over head looking for criminals The neighborhood park where we use to have family picnics is the hang out spots for drug dealers prostitutes and gang members In the past the local high school received many accolades for their educational program The teachers cared about the students and pushed them to be the best they could be Now the teachers could carless about the students and the school almost lost their credentials The things I would do to change the community are have a stronger police presents within the community Enforce a neighborhood watch program Lasty I would create an after school program for students who are in school to inspire them to go to college and to become more than drug dealers and gang members Week 3 D0 2 Due Day 4 Main Forum Please post your response to the following discussion question below by clicking on reply During the 1960s social structure theories strongly influenced the development of delinquency prevention programs Why did many of the earliest programs fail What is being done differently today in the development of prevention programs Many rehabilitation programs in the 1960 s were intended to support juveniles but regrettably the funding was restricted and the programs were so innovative to this proposal that they were not putting the funds in the right places to ensure that the programs would be an achievement Another dilemma of rehabilitation programs was the lack of support from speci c regions of the community for the proper success of these programs Members of the community began to become a little cynical of the legitimacy of the deterrence and rehabilitation programs In addition the law enforcement organizations were not supportive of these programs Intervention treatment and prevention are just some of the fundamentals that assisted in the success not failure of these programs Presently the structure is in the course of becoming error free with little or no room for huge mistakes and in turn has proven to be way more successful than past era programs The idea behind individuals or residents of the community learning and allowing how to properly realize the signi cance of their neighborhoods and themselves comes from programs that are developed to restore the communities In addition this alleviates the burden and hassle off of those residents who truly care about and attempt to keep up the maintenance of the community Those individuals have the ability to focus on other areas of concern and lead a helping hand easily when that burden has been eliminated Response 2 I honestly think that one of the reasons that the programs back then failed was not only due to not having the money to do what they needed to do but also because there was not a real complete understanding of how and why juveniles do the things that they do I also think that they did not have enough resources to be able to reach out to young kids like we do today In our society today we have after school programs like the BoysNGirls Club YMCA and various school programs We also have mentors that try to help kids who grow up in bad neighborhoods I guess to a point we have technology to thank because the internet allows kids to nd other kids to hang out with which can be both good and bad The one thing that they we try to do now as a society is teach the youth the difference between right and wrong and show them what the consequences and bene ts are
