Running Head: PARENTING 1 Parenting: How Do They Do It? Jennifer Robinson ENG 121 Professor Deborah Zeringue December 17, 2012 PARENTING 2 Parenting: How Do They Do It? “Children are God’s little miracles” is what my mom said to me one day while we were out shopping. She was on one of her “when are you going to give me a grandchild?” rants when a couple strolled by with their two young children. “It is not that I do not want children, I just do not want them now,” I told her. That conversation happened at the beginning of this year and now here we are about to begin a new year and I have a five year old. “How is that possible?” you may ask, I will explain as the story continues. I am more suited to parenting than I once thought even though it is a demanding job of making sure he is safe, has all the things he needs, and that he is gaining a quality education. I know you are trying to do the math in your head and it is not quite adding up. Around July of this year, I received a call from my cousin asking if Davon (that is my fiveyearold little cousin) could come and live with me. She has two other children and she is attending college. She said that she would not be able to juggle everything already on her plate along with making sure that he was getting to school ok. I told her that it would be fine if he came to live with me; I had no idea then what I was getting into. When he arrived, one of my main concerns was about his safety. I made sure to teach him my phone number and address in case he got lost in transit from school. I applaud all parents that have more than one child. I did not expect all of the expenses that came along with raising a child. There are the fees for his school, uniforms, school supplies, PARENTING 3 clothes, shoes, food, and the list goes on. I asked my mom how she did it working a minimum wage job with four kids and she simply said, “I do not know but I made it work and so will you”. Parenting: How Do They Do It? That advice gave me some piece of mind, my mom always knows the right thing to say to put my mind at ease. I have been able to provide him with everything that he needs and a lot of stuff that he does not. To say I spoil him is an understatement but as long as he goes to school and works hard, I see no reason why he should not get some of the things asks for. His school starts at 7:25am and he does not get out of school until 5:00pm, which is a schedule that took some getting use to on his part. He was use to being home all day but he has adjusted to the switch and is enjoying school. The school he attends is geared towards getting kids into college, they have started him on the path of thinking about attending college and he is only in kindergarten. I am in the process of teaching him how to read, tell time, and count money. He is learning a lot from school and I would personally like to thank all elementary teachers for the patience that they have. People say that when you have a child your mothering skills kick in and now I believe that is true. Before this experience, I always said, “I never want kids”, but now I have a change of heart. I feel like I would make a great mom and if I ever need help I have an awesome mom who gives the best advice. With all that I do for Davon by making sure that he is safe, that his needs are meant, and that he is getting a quality education I know that I am more prepared for the PARENTING 4 demanding job that is parenting. I no longer have the question of “how do they do it” I found that the answer is patience, guidance, and the occasional glass of wine.
