Running Head MISEENSCENE Miseenscene in Grease Name ENG 225 Introduction to Film Instructor Date MISEENSCENE 2 Miseenscene in Grease There are various elements that are involved in creating some of our favorite films From the script to the editing every aspect of making a movie is critical to movies success with its audience One of the most important parts of movie making is the overall design of the film or the films mise en scene Goodykoontz and Jacobs describe mise en scene as WHAT the audience sees in a scene 2011 Imagine sitting in a movie theater and watching previews for movies premiering in the coming months what makes you want to see those films You only get brief snippets of the plot and story line in those previews so what is that makes go back to see those films It is the overall look of the film that peaks your interests wheatear it shows cars racing down a dimly lit Venice street with explosions in the distance or a couple walking hand in hand through Central Park on a bright sunny day the visuals are a large part of why we attend movie openings by the masses There are a group of key people involved in the overall look of the film the director the production designer and the art director must all work together in collaboration with the cinematographer to make their movie a visual success In the movie Grease 1978 you are greeted with an image overload from the costume choices the settings the hair and the makeup Director Randal Kleiser filmed a nostalgic masterpiece that encompasses what it was like to be a teenager dealing with love sex friendship and of course high school in the 1950 s From the first reading of the script the director has to begin their journey through the creative process and think of how they want the film to feel and the overall look of the movie The director s main job is to interpret his or her vision of the look of the film in correlation with the production designer as well as directs the actors and other MISEENSCENE 3 action occurring while shooting Goodykoontz and Jacobs 2011 In the scene We re Gonna Rule the School the director choose a beautiful sunny day for the shot which coincides with the Miseenscene in Grease supporting characters positive outlook for the upcoming school year From that scene the feel of the film was set Not only does the film s director play an important part of a films miseenscene the production designer also has a major role Philip J efferies Phil J efferies was the production designer for the movie Grease As the production designer J efferies was largely responsible for informing and realizing the director39s vision Being the production designer means that you are over the entire art department of a film which means that they have key input in the decisions for hair makeup costumes and settings In the fore mentioned scene you can imeditealy identify the era just by the on screen characters vehicle clothes makeup and hair Also the production designer has input on the lighting and camera angles J efferies as the production designer had many other tasks that were part of the creative development of the movie Grease As it is with most films the production designer and the director prepare a breakdown of the script and they discuss how best to shoot the film which means they are deciding whether to use sets andor locations what should be built and what should be adapted whether there is a visual theme that recurs throughout the film and whether there are certain design elements that may give an emotional or psychological depth to the film mediamatchcom 2013 Another intracate part of making a movie come to life through miseenscene is the art director As the art director one of Gene Kelly s primary job on the movie Grease was to keep the sets props and costumes appropriate to the story and characters and historically accurate for MISEENSCENE 4 the films era Goodykoontz and Jacobs 2011 Art directors are also responsible for helping to facilitate the production designer39s creative vision for all the locations and sets that eventually Miseenscene in Grease give the film its unique visual identity creativeskillsetorg In the movie clip We re Gonna Rule the School from the movie Grease you can fully understand how the art director production director and the director have to collaborate to make a scene look form to life for their audience In my opinion the miseenscene in the scene that I have chosen is that all of the elements in the scene work together cohesively to portray the youthful energy that resonates through the entire film Every scene of Grease displays a candycoated image of the era and youth It gives us a 1950s that is pure bright and colorful The Rydell high schoolers have enduring friendships and longlasting romance In contrast The Last Picture Show is shot in black and white and rife with broken friendships moping teenagers exploitative sex and tumbleweeds amcinemal960presentcom The placement of this scene in the movie gives a hit of what is to come in the latter parts of the movie Overall the look and feel of the movie Grease is light and fun and a testament to life in an era that many of us wish we were around to experience Grease was and still is a visual success because of the director the production designer and the art director who all collaborated together to put together the overall look of the movie Grease is supposed to be a feel good film MISEENSCENE and I think that Director Randal Kleiser has brought that carefree energy to this film through the costuming hair makeup and set designs References 2012 February 29 Nostalgia in Grease Web log post Retrieved from httpamcinema1960presentwordpresscom20120229nostalgiaingrease Carr A Stigwood R
