Electronic Health Records 1 Electronic Health Records Nicole A Morgan HCA417 Electronic Medical Records Instructor Linda Hoppe February 23 2015 Electronic Health Records 2 The health record of a patient is a very important part when it comes to the documenting the care of the patient and also for quality improvement purpose The information for the patient is supposed to be shared among all the professionals in the health care Paper charts have become a problem to the health care institutions and this is why it has become very important to develop an automated health record Gurley L 2004 The reason as to why the records of the patient were lacking from the doctors in the emergency room was because the physician who had examined the patient before was the only one who had the medical history of the patient because it was recorded on paper and the records had not been distributed to other offices in the hospital Despite the hospital being good the problem of lack of records of the patient by the hospital is because there was no connection from one system to the other which makes it possible for other offices to have access to the records of all the patients Croskerry P amp Cosby K 2008 The system of storing records for the patient that was being used by the hospital was through the paper and having paper records is not easy to be accessible by every staff in the department and it also takes time to transfer the information from one place to another The unfortunate state of the medical records is the reason as to why medical history of the patient was missing from the ER Despite being in the same hospital and because of lack of timely copies of the existing records it led to the patient to be tested again In order to solve this problem of lack of adequate distribution of medical history of Electronic Health Records 3 the patient from one department to the other so that it can be available to all staff members in the hospital the health care institutions are supposed to consider implementing electronic health records Electronic health records provide the health care organization an opportunity to improve the safety and quality of care of the patient One of the greatest problem that the health care organization face in this new world is providing comprehensive accessible timely and reliable information of the patient to every members of the health care team both in secondary and primary health care Croskerry P amp Cosby K 2008 Despite having a great importance to health care electronic health records initiative is far behind other industries in health care because technology is moving at a rapid pace and the organizations have slowed the pace of automated systems for an electronic documentation system Gurley L 2004 Another reason as to why electronic health care records initiative is behind in health care is because of the startup cost which is excessive this is because this is the time that the health care organizations are trying hard to reduce their costs therefore allocating capital to the information systems is posing as a great challenge Gurley L 2004 In conclusion health care organization are supposed to implement this initiative because it makes it possible for the health care providers to better manage the patient s care through a secure use and sharing of information Gurley L 2004 Electronic health records are very important in health care because it makes it easy for the staff members to have access to health information of the patient thus avoiding the patient from undergoing the same tests again and again Electronic Health Records 4 Reference Gurley L 2004 Advantages and disadvantages of the electronic medical records American Academy of Medical Administration Croskerry P amp Cosby K 2008 Patient safety in emergency medicine Lippincott Williams amp Wilkins
