Week 5 DQ2 Virtual Patient Encounters and EVisits In 250300 words describe the differences between provider to patient email secure messaging and Evisits Also discuss the benefits of virtual encounters with a clinician and patient vs one on one consultation Include the advantages and disadvantages for each In what circumstances may any be inappropriate In want circumstances may one or more be advantagespreferred The two ways listed above in the discussion post on how to communicate with your provider and or clinician both have their disadvantages and advantages However as the healthcare employee who is responding to the patients you still need to follow the HIPPA guidelines regarding communicating with the patient Via emaileVisit For example a emails with the patient regarding their STD results The patient will generally call or email to schedule an appointment at a lab Three to five days later the patient will contact the office for the results of their test Sometimes you end up playing telephone tag because of Hippa you cannot leave a detailed message on the patient s answering machine unless instructed by the patient and even at that all you can say is your test results were normal can t state What test was done Therefore no information is given out in the email that would state that the patient is either positive or negative with an STD As far as eVisit we set these up over the phone and retrieve patient history their chief complaint and other history pertaining to the reason they want to be tested The advantage for emails is it makes it easier to go back and forth with the doctor in stead of trying to get through on a telephone it allowing more thorough exchange of information than the traditional office Visit and or phone calls With advantages theirs also disadvantages of course Doctors could not really see the patient through an email A disadvantage would be that the doctor is unable to see a patient s facial expression or body language through a email and have to take the patient at their word on What they are telling the doctor EVisits our textbook states that an eVisit has all the advantages that email lacks not only are eVisit secure but the eVisit also gathers symptoms and HPI information creating a documented medical encounter When the eVisit data is imported into the EHRs it becomes a part of the patient39s chart just like any other Visit Gartee 2011 Pg 422 EVisits are a type of online patientprovider meeting where electronic information is exchanged This technological version of a Visit can be very beneficial to patients that do not frequently go to the physician but have a concern about their health Some advantages of eVisits is that it39s quick convenient and efficient That39s pretty much all the advantages I have for evisits therefore a disadvantage would be that the doctor does not a face to face view of the patient If I had to choose emailing a physician or having an evisitI guess I would chose emailing the physician and let the physician decide ifI need to make an appointment now later or go to the ED With evisits I do not see anything wrong with the idea considering telemedicine is one of the ways we communicate with our patients I just prefer to send an email or pick up the phone and schedule an appointment Then there would be no miscommunication on the physicians end or mine I would take care of the situation with one office visit instead of having several evisits Reference Gartee R 2011 Electronic Health Records 2nd ed Upper Saddle River NJ Pearson Prentice Hall
