Running head: ROLE OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 1 Role of Operations Management Angie Killion ISCOM 471 August 19, 2013 Paul Yakob University of Phoenix ROLE OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 2 Role of Operations Management Operations management is an important role in any business. The importance can be seen when exploring what operations management actually is and how it relates to everyday business. After reviewing the functions of operations management (OM) and getting a better understanding of what OM is, applying it to the everyday business of Gulf Winds International will help show just how operations management plays an important role in daytoday functions of any business. Operations Management According to Chase, Jacobs, and Aquilano (2006), operations management is the design, operation, and improvement of the methods that produce and deliver the organization’s products and services. In short, operations management is getting the daytoday of the company done as quickly and as thoroughly as possible without errors and at the lowest cost as possible. The study of operations management can be beneficial to anyone who wishes to be a great manager. Studying OM can give one a better understanding to approaches in managing operations, while providing a systematic way of looking at an organizations process. It also lends concepts and tools that can be used I other areas of a business thus opening up a variety of career opportunities OM is about the whole picture in regards to the producing of products or services therefore OM is about making decisions. Decisions made in operations management are broken down into three areas: strategic decisions, tactical decisions, and operational planning and control decisions. Strategic decisions focus on how, where and when to make a product. Tactical decisions focus on getting the material and labor for the product within the guidelines set by the strategic decision. Operational planning and control decisions are shortterm decisions made in ROLE OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 3 regards to job priorities for the day or week and who will be assigned to do the jobs. After defining what operations management is, it is hard to believe that most feel that OM is not important to the success of a business. A company’s operation depends on customer service processes, purchasing, distribution, manufacturing, and other processes to be successful. All of these processes are part of operations management. These areas are often a source of great cost to a business, but if managed correctly, they can help improve profit margins. Therefore, OM is essential to the success of an organization. Operation Management’s role at Gulf Winds International Although Gulf Winds International (GWI) does not have a person with the tile of operations manager, there are several people who certainly wear the hat and are privy to all aspect of the company’s operations. The company has operations in both Houston and Dallas which include nine warehouses. The corporate office is in Houston and houses the company’s accounting department, transportation department, driver settlement, driver safety, inside sales, IT department, marketing, and customer service all of which are connected to operations management. Our Vice President of Transportation once carried the title of Operations Manager but with the rapid growth of the company, the roll has been dispersed among several department managers. Several of these managers have more knowledge of the entire operation than other and these are the managers that our President and Vice President rely on to keep them up to date on the daytoday operations. When change is needed, focus teams are put together to address the operational changes needed and is approved by our Vice President of Transportation, so although no one carries the title of VP of Operations or COO, the VP of Transportation certainly has the role. ROLE OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 4 The field of operations management is an interesting one. It requires several different decision making approaches as well as knowledge in all areas of a company’s daytoday operations. Proper operational management can help streamline and cut costs across the board for a company, thus, helping raise the company profit margins. In exploring the definition of operations management and using this information to show how it relates to Gulf Winds International, it is clear that OM is essential to the growth and success of an organization.
