ELEMENTS OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS Elements of Religious Traditions Priscilia Castillo REl 134 October 14 2013 Ron Castelo ELEMENTS OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS 2 Elements of Religious Traditions Believers practice religions A traditional dictionary defines religion as a system of beliefs that involves God or Gods rituals moral codes and prayers according to Molloy 2010 Many of these religions are passed from century to century carrying ancient traditions and ceremonies Regardless of the differences in religious values and practices certain basics in religion stay the same The lives of people are made up of rituals and traditions Muslims believe in one God who is the sole and sovereign ruler of the universe and Mohammed who is his final massager Christians worship God who they believe is the creator of the entire world Buddhist believes in Buddha and Hindus believe in Brahma Different religions mention to the sacred by numerous names such as The Great Spirit The Holy and The Divine The Great Mother According to Molloy 2010 the term God carries the notion of a cosmic person a divine with the will and the intelligences Divine can be spend in various ways such as praying studying the Bible of the Holy Books A prayer is an outcome of a continuous relationship with the Divine All believers pray because of the belief that God is always listening and that praying is the best way of communicating with God The time of eternity Molloy 2010 is sacred time Sacred time is when a person prays worship and or for rituals For example Roman Catholics see Sunday as the day for rest Which is why the Catholics call Sunday the Sabbath Day Catholics spend the day doing to church to pray and gathering with others fellow believers ELEMENTS OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS 3 A sacred space is a place of worship where holiness is the strongest and religious can revive spiritual strength Some sacred spaces are highlighted in the text Molloy 2010 are in the natural world such as a great mountains a volcano a lake a forest or any natural site Molloy 2010 also states that the sacred space is associated with the center of the universe In the earlier days mankind believed that divinity is to help converse away natural occurrences such as hurricanes earthquakes lunar eclipses solar and volcanic eruptions Many believers believe that all natural sites are sacred spaces Rituals are the basic way people can ensure they are living in harmony with one another and also with nature Molloy 2010 The traditional religious rituals are carry from one generation to the next Some of the rituals include life cycle ceremonies taboos and sacrifice Most of the taboos relates to birth sex blood and death For example some religions are concern about the spirit of a dead person as for it would seek revenge Taboo is a rule that forbids specific behavior with regard to certain objects people animals days or phrases of life Molloy 2010 The taboos can be extending to positions of power like Priests and Chiefs Also when a taboo is broken the person or the group that broke the taboo must offer a sacrifice Hindu traditions are distinguished by sacred elements because it would be hard to list all the elements of their religious traditions The philosophy of Hinduism has stressed to the importance about their teaching according to God In Islam religion Muslims wash their feet before entering masque as the symbol of washing their sins and purification There are various types of religions Religion is used to help people in the world to understand the different cultures beliefs and traditions Each religions encourages relationship with Divine sacred time sacred space or natural world and even with each other Studying ELEMENTS OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS religions is not easy because of it different aspects of each religion and how they have change thought out the generations Reference Molloy M 2010 Experiencing the world s religions Tradition challenge and change 5th Ed New York NY McGrallHill
