BUSINESS RESEARCH ETHICS Business Research Ethics Christian Landry RES351 April 29 2015 Leroy Paul BUSINESS RESEARCH ETHICS 2 Business Research Ethics As a manager of my wife39s jewelry business J CLDesigns I help to hold the company in a system of ethical standards The business is ever changing and must create new products to stay relevant with existing and continue to reach new customers While practicing business research to gain inspiration for new projects unethical practices need to be avoided to circumvent damages to either party Ignoring what is ethical could affect our organization and society in a negative way but monitoring ethics along the way can help deter such problems or even defuse them before they arise As a small business in the jewelry industry styles change daily It is a challenge to remain entirely ethical within the community but we strive to do just that J CLDesign was just a hobby for my crafty wife Jenn that turned into a profitable home business selling mostly on an ecommerce platform This platform called Etsy is home to hundreds of thousands of handmade artisan shops around the world trying to make a name for their business One thing that is very evident on their website is how many jewelry stores are copying each other39s designs to the point where it is impossible to know who is the originator We often go to a few shops that offer similar jewelry for ideas on what is in style and what is selling That is where the ethical issue arises making someone else39s designs with your own signature style and air without copying their creative design There is saying for this quotIf you39re not innovating you39re imitatingquot Seeing another business do well with a design can be tempting to try to replicate and claim the design as your own but as an ethical jeweler my wife likes to come up with her own designs When you avoid copying other designs it enables herself to use her creativity to come up with some of the most unique designs found on Etsy We market her business as being unique so her customers should never come across anything that she makes in another store She has gained a growing following of return customers who appreciate her exclusive designs Copying other designers would lose the trust of our customers and damage BUSINESS RESEARCH ETHICS her integrity in the community Some jewelers have patented their creations making it exclusive to their business Other companies must respect this patent or face legal consequences that would cost them business and ultimately their reputation Infringing on a designers patent could cause a lawsuit costing money that could otherwise go back into the business for growth This would also affect the other business as it takes time and attention away from their practice Acting in such an unethical manner could be detrimental to our reputation in the industry The fashion and jewelry industry would look at our business as a company with dishonorable morals Copying a design from a well known artist could ruin relationships with various people and companies in the trade Etsy has the power to disallow a business to sell on their platform for any reason that goes against their seller policy Working with wholesalers could become more challenging as they would not want work with a company that has been in a lawsuit Bloggers would lose interest in the brand and stop their promoting campaigns Written press articles could make it around the industry giving our company a black eye Summarize the business research project or article 0 What unethical research practices should be avoided in this project Blatantly copying another business39 design or not acknowledging the inspiration 0 Which particular parties involved in the research could face injury What injuries could occur We could face criminal lawsuits for patent infringement They could incur loss of sales and customers 0 How could unethical behavior in this research affect the organization the individual and society Could give us a bad reputation We would be affected socially ruining trust with other companies within our industry For example ecommerce platforms distributors wholesalers bloggers and any written press BUSINESS RESEARCH ETHICS How could the unethical behavior be monitored or resolved it found to be occurring ln hopes to prevent this the best scenario is to come up with our own designs To correct any wrong doings we would no longer offer the product or acknowledge the originator
