HRM531 Final Exam Alyssa Oberdacker HRM531 Final Exam Dr Byron Phillips 01242013 HRM531 Final Exam 1 Diversity involves having a group of a wide variety of people from different backgrounds all working together towards a common goal without giving any one member an advantage or disadvantage over the other In relation to Human Capital Management diversity can present many challenges and provide room for potential problems It is the responsibility of this department to manage the relations between all employees as well as help to resolve any con icts that may arise Having a more diverse group of employees is better for the business to get different viewpoints and approaches based on individual experiences and backgrounds but this can cause tension from employees not seeing eyetoeye The case study showed me that people will act differently depending on the situation and are mostly out to look for ways to better themselves and some may or may not care about properly managing diversity 2 This measures the output of a process and allows for more communication between employees and managers as to what is expected of their position The results of this plan are used to discuss ways to better the employee s performance in their position and leave the door open for questions and communication 3 Define the problem if it is a performance or a behavior problem Find what duties or performance needs improvement Establish the priorities for the position duties Set up the standards by which performance will be measured Establish both short and long term goals to better the change Develop an action plan and set up periodic review dates Review the employee s actions in relation to the performance plan 4 Training is an event that usually happens when an employee is newly hired or put into a new position in the company or a new procedure is rolled out and focuses on short term goals HRM531 Final Exam Development is a process for the entire time an employee is with the company with a goal of promotion and other long term achievements 5 In my current job I m in a prime position to update our training programs More so than implementing a new program better utilization of the current plans will help the company to thrive and lower our turnover Our evaluations can be done way more often than they are and certifying more trainers will give them the ability to train new bakers and earn a training bonus which would be more incentive for them to do a better job 6 Organizational data will be able to tell you all of the positions duties in your company as well as information on the employees themselves You will be able to see the goals of the company and make sure each job is pursuing these objectives Market data will allow you to properly compensate workers for their jobs as well as allow you to find out if you should focus in house or do a countrywide search to fill a position This will also keep you apprised of your competition and allow you to not fall behind 7 When creating employee compensation and benefits you have to do a job analysis job evaluation and job pricing to make sure you are accurately compensating for each position When it comes to the components of employee compensation and benefits this is something I struggle with because I have nothing to do with this process in my current position everything comes from corporate and we all follow along and do as we re told Concerning organizational and market data to conduct human capital and management functions this is important for making a compensation and benefits package that will keep your employees happy with their jobs and the happier your employees are the more likely they are to be productive in their jobs HRM531 Final Exam 8 Employee compensation and benefits packages must be created by doing a job analysis and seeing what will be done in each position then this has to be compared to the market norm to make sure you are offering fair and acceptable compensation for these duties As for the benefits that can vary dependent on if the position is full or part time as well as what each company wants to offer in regard to a 401K plan or a wellness program in house 9 A job description tells potential employees the functions of the position you are hiring for This lists the duties performed as well as the education required and the personal qualities you will be looking for while interviewing candidates A job description can also be used in doing employee reviews to make sure they are successfully completing all the functions of their position Also you can use a job description to see if you need to create a new position in the company or to weed out any redundant positions that may exist 10 A job analysis is the process used to collect information about the duties responsibilities necessary skills outcomes and work environment of a particular job This is different than evaluating an employee s performance or even compiling a job description to look for someone to fill the position Without a job analysis you won t know exactly the role you need to fill in the organization and that can lead to a high turnover due to looking at the wrong candidates for the job 11 Unions strive for higher wages shorter hours and better fringe benefits for their members The push for better working conditions and can go on strike virtually halting the business productivity altogether While unions can provide more productive workers they can raise the costs for the business by pushing for these higher wages The relationships between the HRM531 Final Exam unions and the business can be good or bad mostly dependent on the individual union and their approach towards the company itself 12 Complying with employment laws is a challenging process but by documenting everything and regularly checking up on your standards of conduct in the company you can help to avoid breaking the law As managers we need to be very clear about job requirements and performance standards we need to treat people as individuals and we must evaluate each individual fairly relative to job requirements and performance standards 13 The Department of Labor has these laws listed on their website and you can read them there and make sure you follow all the rules yourself Also a company may hire a consulting firm to come in and make sure everything is being done to the letter of the law and that can take some strain off of the human resources department 14 In the case study Will had approved a new website for the company with a controversial comment about how they have made little progress in diversity when that is what the company has been preaching for some time Charles is offended by this because they had worked together on the article before and he is taking notice that some of their minority interns are not getting the opportunities that others are In the end Will contacts Charles telling him that he will do whatever he has to do to fix this problem and that he did not know how it had happened in the first place IfI was Charles heading up the diversity recruiting department I would have insisted to go on this interview with Will because of it being about diversity Charles has to find a way to stand up for his department and not let Will keep going off script as he has been known to in the past Will should also seriously consider how his actions are HRM531 Final Exam affecting the company s public image by talking about doing one thing and going the complete opposite direction 15 The most important thing I learned in this class is that while we think of human resources departments to be there for resolving upsets between employees and if you have a question about your paycheck human capital management covers way more than this A key to good human capital management is to be extremely clear and detailed about everything you expect from your employees because this will allow you to evaluate them and discipline them if necessary without worry about how they may take it If you leave no room for interpretation there are no loop holes to be found to get around the rules of your company and everyone will know exactly what is expected of them and how their individual job matters to what the company does This feeling of belonging and importance will also lead to better retention of employees because they will feel like they make a difference and their opinion and work matters in the grand scheme of things
