Discussion Question 1 How do spiritual and religious beliefs help or hinder individual access to human services Explain your answer and refer to one or more of the groups listed in Chapter 8 Many people find their way through life by relying on their own spiritual and religious beliefs A counselor can use the same beliefs to help their clients but need to totally understand the cultures of the client Each cultural has specific perspectives on their spiritual and religious beliefs Take the Native American culture as an example Their beliefs show that failure to handle life challenges physical illnesses and mental health problems are consequences of a lost harmony of one of the four directions of spirit nature body and mind As a counselor you can help this type of client by either you or a Native American counselor helping them to find their way back to harmony You can teach them how to better handle their challenges in life You can show them the help they need to become physically fit again by sending them to a Native American doctor to fix what ever is wrong with them physically They will feel a lot more free to open up to a Native American person because they will understand the need to feel whole again Once they feel like they are back in harmony with themselves they will no longer feel like a failure and they will return to their people They will then be excepted again Response 2 Religious and spiritual views can either hurt or hinder access to human services depending on the situation and the group involved Some religious groups insist that their members receive only help from within ie Amish To go to an outside source is considered unacceptable and could cause issues within family and community Mormons some not all prefer to keep counseling food and monetary help within their community Their belief that part of the function of the religion is as an extended family where everyone helps the other in the service of their Lord Medical care is not acceptable in some formal religionsScientology and some Jehovah39s Witness sects All of these situations might cause an individual in need to not seek outside help from social service agencies Other religions have no set rules and encourage their members to get help from whatever source it is available Spiritual belief is a different but sometimes linked concept Native Americans who live the traditional lifestyle are less likely to go to outside agencies for certain types of issues While this is a generalization in some cases it is true The use of Shaman and sweat lodge is considered a better option to standard Western Medicine because it focuses more on the connections between our Creator and ourselves Other spiritual beliefs mirror this same type of behaviorpreferring to find their own karmic balance or focus until it is absolutely necessary to seek outside help Discussion Question 2 How do spiritual and religious beliefs impact a person39s perception of the needs of others Perceptions and perspective are different for each and every person no matter what religion or spiritual belief system they follow Depending on their relationship with God people nature and all interconnections within those links a person39s perception of what the needs of others are may vary I believe that God39s will decides what happens to each of usbut sometimes odd circumstances do happen where people need the help of outside sources Those of us in the army trenches of caring for other people do it for many reasons Some because it pays the bills others because we serve our Lord by helping people others because they see the need but have no reason other than humanitarian ones Any of those reasons are valid but some are more personal in relation to our beliefs The Bible teaches us through God39s word that we are to help our brothers and sisters The definition of what that help needs to be is more based on what peoples needs are in this world If we can help people it is our obligation and duty to humanity Response 2 This can depend on each person39s spiritual and religious beliefs If you are raised to believe that there is no God then your perception could have a very bad influence on others By doing things to hurt God and other people you will leave a bunch of bad will where ever you goYou would be teaching that there is no love for others If on the other hand you are raised to believe in God then your perception will have a good influence on people You would spend your life loving one another When you show love to your fellow man then you receive love back in return You go out of your way to correct any wrongs that you seeand ask for it to be done in the name of Jesus then it will be done It might not be done exactly the way we want it to be or in the way we think it should be It will be done in God39s way and time
