Running Head SIMPLIFYING 1 Simplifying Expressions Name MAT 221 Introduction to Algebra Linda Seeger Date SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS 2 Simplifying Expressions Simplifying an algebraic expression is one of the most important parts to solving a math problem using By simplifying the problem it becomes easier to solve To simplify any expression you need to asses all of the parts of the problem before you began the process of trying to solve it There are a few steps that should be followed each time you are simplifying an algebraic expression You should always start by removing the parentheses then combine like terms and last combine the coefficients and constants I will be simplifying three different algebraic expressions using the before mentioned steps and explaining the actions taken to reach my final answer A 2aa 5 4a 5 Expression given 2a2 10a 4a 20 The first step to simplifying an expression is to 2a2 14a 20 remove the parentheses this is done by using the distributive property Next I combined like terms by their coefficients which simplified the expression fully B 2w 3 3w 4 5w 6 The expression given to simplify this expression I 2w 3 3w 12 5w 30 will follow the same steps from the previous 2w 3w 5w 3 12 30 problem I start by working to remove the CW 15 parentheses This was done by using the SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS 3 15 distributive property and multiplying the factors times the terms inside the parentheses Simplifying Expressions Next I grouped the like terms the focused on adding and subtracting to get the simplified answer C 005 03m 35n 08009n 22m This expression was the most difficult for me to 0015m 175n 0072n 0176m simplify because of the decimals After fully 0015m 176m 175n 0072 evaluating the problem I found that I could 17615m 1822n approach it the same as I had the other two problems By first working to remove the parentheses I was able to better understand how to simplify the expression After multiplying within the parentheses I grouped the like terms by their coefficients and the added them to simplify and get my final answer After working through algebraic expression AC I have a better understanding of how the distributive property works in simplifying real numbers All three expressions where simplified by following the same basic steps of removing the parentheses combining like terms and combine the coefficients and constants Once those steps where done the addition and subtraction used to simplify the problems was made easier I was nervous to begin this assignment but after working through the problems and seeing how simple it was to simplify SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS 4 each one I am no longer confused When it comes to using the distributive property or simplifying an expression to get the lowest term
