Proposal for a New Healthcare System Axia College University of Phoenix Our current healthcare system is awed There are numerous uninsured and underinsured individuals in the United States and the numbers are still increasing every day There are 10 to 15 million people in the United States who cannot afford health insurance for themselves or their family Donohue 2008 Everyone should be able to afford healthcare coverage regardless of his or her income Some may have to pay more than others but every individual should be covered With the medical care need on the rise the government needs to fix the broken healthcare system Making health insurance available to everyone at an affordable price is one way to fix the healthcare system Services like regular doctor appointments laboratory work and other basic needs would be covered by a basic insurance However for more advanced services the cost for insurance would be slightly higher Things like surgery therapy longterm care and inpatient or outpatient hospital stays would be the services that individuals would have to purchase the more advanced insurance The price of the insurance would be based on each individual s income A percentage would be taken out of the person s income monthly to pay for the insurance of his or her choice The percent would vary depending on which coverage the person prefers Transportation to doctor appointments should be something offered at a low cost The person would have to call ahead of time to arrange the pickup time This would allow people who have no form of transportation to get treatment for aliments they need help with Some form of prescription coverage should be implemented Medication cost is extremely expensive and many individuals go without treatment because they cannot afford the medicine This coverage should be based on an individual s income just like the health insurance Children and the elderly should be covered no matter what the circumstances are The elderly are normally on numerous medications that are costly and the elderly live on a fixed income Without their medication the elderly can become extremely ill or even die To prevent this from happening the elderly have to spend the extra money they do not truly have on the medication Prescription coverage is an area the government needs to work on fixing Preexisting conditions are another problem that needs to be fixed Preexisting conditions should be covered by all insurance companies Insurance companies should not refuse paying for services because of the high cost they could end up paying When individuals find out they have a disease or a disorder they may need help from the insurance company to pay for the treatment Not getting treatment could result in becoming seriously ill or death Without help from insurance companies these results could be an outcome for so many individuals All legal residents of the United States would benefit from these changes to the healthcare system Because the insurance is based on income lowincome families would benefit the most from these changes Highincome families would still not have to pay high prices for insurance The only population that would be disadvantaged from this new system would be individuals who are not legal residents of the United States This new healthcare system will fix many challenges to the current system A majority of people receive insurance through the company they work for This could be a problem for people who become unemployed With the new system proposal even the unemployed would be temporarily covered The coverage would be limited but additional coverage could be purchased at any time The individual would then have the option to keep the insurance when he or she starts a new job This would be very convenient for everyone Another challenge that could be fixed by this new healthcare system would be preexisting conditions With insurance companies having to treat all preeXisting conditions patients will get the quality of care they need for all diseases or disorders This would be a giant step for our healthcare system Electronic medical records should replace all paper files in every medical facility Doctors would have access to patient s files no matter how old the files are Electronic medical records could prevent errors when it comes to the treatment process All files should be computerized for the sake of the patients and the ease of the doctors There are no major problems that would be created from this proposal However a minor problem that could occur from the proposal is abuse of the system With the cost of insurance being so low individuals may believe it is all right to abuse the healthcare system Abusing the system is definitely something that could occur but the chance that everyone could have insurance would be worth taking that chance With this new healthcare system implemented everyone in the United States would be eligible for health insurance With low insurance cost individuals would then be able to get treatment for aliments they never thought they could get treatment for This new healthcare system would make the United States a more happy and healthy country This proposal could be the best outcome for everyone References Donohue T 2008 US Health Care Strengths and Weaknesses Retrieved February 27 2009 from
