Organizational Structure 1 Organizational Structure MGT23O Organizational Structure 2 Abstract Franchise companies including McDonald s Burger King and Jason s Deli have interests in expanding their name to grow profits Organizational structures allow these companies to offer opportunities for outside parties However each organization carries its own requirements as they function differently in several aspects This paper will define the differences and requirements each company holds in terms of human resources marketing channels finance operations and departmentalization among other things Organizational Structure 3 Structured organizations operate differently Comparing and contrasting several companies can show benefits and also show the downfalls for the ways those same operations work Implementation of marketing varies from one company to the next whereas the finance and human resources departments may follow a professional standard Every company functions in a manner that benefits them as well as previously tested theories Jason s Deli has become a restaurant that provides fastfood at a low price but its organizational structure is very different from other franchisors Jason s Deli teaches the franchise owner about the different elements of the business and the organization provides up to five managers 1012 weeklong training programs The store will have third assistant managers whose responsibility includes specific goals for the store s deli products The second and first assistant managers manage staffing training food and labor costs Jason s Deli 2011 A general manager is responsible for the whole operation of one store and develops marketing and advertising skills to gain more loyal customers The catering manager coordinates catering and delivery of products to customers and develops relationships to retain positive comeback business Burger King Corporation is the second largest fastfood chain in the United States trailing behind McDonald s The company franchises more than 10400 restaurants and owns about 1000 for a chain wide exceeding 11455 with locations in all 50 states and 56 countries Burger King Company Info 2011 The company services 157 million customers each day Organizational Structure 4 and over 24 billon burgers are sold each year Burger King Company Info 2011 While observing McDonald s and Burger King s organizational structure they are similar and different in many ways They both share the same basic organizational goals which are profitability sales volume cleanliness and fast and courteous service McDonald s and Burger King both maintain quality service to their customers McDonald s is known for its friendly service its People Principles states that employees are to respect recognize and be open as part of their development the McDonald s Corporate Responsibility Burger King Employees are considered outstanding if they are pleasant courteous and cheerful all the time with their customers employees and supervisors Both companies are at equality with each other and know that it is important to serve their customers in the best manner McDonald s and Burger King continually compete with each other for possessing the best burger and fries McDonald s guarantees the quality of its food through beef and quality chicken fish fresh fruits and vegetables The same value speaks for Burger King with its ame grilled burgers such as the Whopper Burger King ensures compliancy with its animal Handling Policies Similarly both organizations contain almost the same value exibility in its menus and almost have the same price for the same kind of products The chief executive officer oversees the longterm goals of all company locations and teaches classes to give the store managers insight into how to become good leaders The management trainee program provides manager incentives to keep an instore program that emphasizes customer satisfaction and also has continuing training to keep manager s skills current The franchises are seen as partners and all franchises have support through management Organizational Structure 5 training operational support site selection construction support marketing support and distribution Jason s Deli 2011 Owners do not have to worry about marketing the organization to a large customer base but can focus on daily operations and making local customers pleased with the organization s products McDonald s has a similar method of an organizational structure but McDonald s is very big and covers many parts of the United States and other parts of the globe Jason s Deli is a fairly new organization that may adopt an organizational format of other big fastfood chains as it grows but currently it focuses on local tastes and preferences through hot and cold sandwiches and soups Functional organizational structures are grouped by skills such as human resources law marketing finance research and development and production The functional structure is a hierarchy using the concept of subordination A hybrid form of organization occurs when functional and divisional practices overlap in which managers and staff personnel report to two bosses in both entities In product organizations all functions that contribute to a given product report to one manager and that manager report to a project manager B ateman amp Snell A service organization is nonprofit where members often meet to discuss and implement fundraising plans and perform charity work for other organizations in need With more than 32000 restaurants in more than 117 countries McDonald s is one of the leading fastfood restaurant chains McDonald s 2011 This is accomplished by people owning their own franchise Although they may own their own franchise all McDonald s franchises have the same service food and marketing requirements It does not matter if someone enjoys a Big Mac in Japan or a milkshake in India The menus have the same appearance along with big yellow M so many people can easily recognize Positive aspects exist for departmentalization Organizational Structure 6 there are similar specialties common skills and knowledge in each restaurant McDonald s can also cater to the needs of their areas for example in airports they do not have the Dollar Menu and in Hong Kong they have the Shrimp Burger One of the downsides to this geographical departmentalization is that some become isolated from other organizational areas Whether it is McDonald s Burger King or Jason s Deli each brand has its own style of keeping their name alive and continuing franchise opportunities across the country and even the world By comparing and contrasting there are several processes in which each company can be seen to push their product to the public No matter the company the type of food items produced or the demographics involved these companies retain the same goal sell the product At this point the compare and contrasts end as all attain to
