8 w N U O H What are the similarities and differences between Piaget s and Vygotsky s theories of cognitive development Which one do you believe is more accurate Explain why Cognitive development is defined as the development of the ability to think and reason This being said the theory behind cognition can have alternatives views as the ways each individual develops can differ Piaget and Vygotsky both were regarded as constructivists This ideals assumes that people learn based on the information which is provided to them paired with the information they already know as well as their personal belief and attitude toward the information Piaget and Vygotsky shared the believe that societal in uences played a role in the boundaries in cognitive growth This is primarily the only area in which they agreed on Piaget believed that intelligence was developed through action Further he suggested that learning took place through interacting with their surroundings and development came before the learning process Vygotcky alternatively believed that learning came before development and it was only through history and symbolism that information was stored and therefore developed Vygotsky added that Children or people in general value input from their surroundings and from those around them Piaget inferred that there were essentially four key developmental stages while Vygotsky stated there were no set stages at all I am partial to Vygotsky39s concept of cognitive development as I believe that one cannot develop if first they do not learn Even from infancy a baby learns social structure and learns to behave in the effort to reach something it desires For instance an infant learns to cry when if they want something because a parent or caregiver constantly reacts when an infant cries Essentially how we react to Children teaches them positive and negative aspects the same can be held true for information If we are always teaching a Child that the letter P makes a quotpaquot sound then they will learn to pronounce it as such If we are teaching a Child that the letter P makes a quotseequot sounds then a Child will develop to understand P as quotseequot
