CGD 218 Week 3 Discussion 2 Motion Pictures Like photographs motion pictures are a signi cant medium for visual communication Watch at least three of the documentary trailers below Documentary Trailers 0 Food Inc Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitett1286537 Inside lob Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1645089 Marley Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1183919l Planet Earth Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1645089 Waste Land Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1268204 Based on the trailer what do you think the intended message of the documentary is What are motion pictures able to do that photos and still images cannot and how does that impact the message being communicated Can you think of any ethical concerns or controversial issues related to the use of motion pictures as a communication medium Explain Guided Response Respond to at least two of your peers with feedback on their The three trailers that I watched were Food Inc Inside Job and Marley The intended message of Food Inc was to inform consumers of the problem in the food industry and what farmers and the government are willing to do to keep us in the dark about what we are eating and putting in our bodies The ethical issues and controversial concern is that farmers are not disclosing the conditions of their farms or what they are using to grow our food The same thing can be said for the government regarding ethics and controversial issues if they allow these conditions to continue without penalty to the farmer The government should not be allowed to alter guidelines of the food industry when determining the level of contaminants in our food that could harm us The intended message of Inside Job is to inform us that executives of the housing financial and auto industry knew more than they disclosed about the problems in each industry and how the economy would be affected It would also inform us of the financial gains and in some cases illegal behavior of those who are in charge and how they went to the government for help when then reaped millions in personal assets I don39t feel that there is should be and ethical concerns and controversial issues related the release of this movie as we all have suffered from the collapse of the economy therefore all things that effect us in anyway should be disclosed The intended message of Marley is to show that he was more than a reggae musician who had long hair who smoked marijuana all day His music is popular in Jamaica and became popular in the United States as it spoke of political change and a life free from oppression The only ethical concern I can see is the infringement of copy righted material We all have listened to or downloaded music without gaining permission Although a still photograph can have an positive or negative impact motion pictures adds impact by adding movement According to Ryan 2012 the use of motion effects the message it also affects us visually and emotionally Ryan 2012 p 139 The only ethical concern or controversial issue that should matter with motion pictures as a communication medium is if the information provided in the movie is false or harmful to a group of people If the information provided can be researched and proven to be true or there is no infringement on copy right by gaining permission there is no reason why is should not be made public even in the situation where money is being made or when it is used as a form of entertainment Reference Food Inc Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1286537 Inside Job Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1645089 Marlev Trailer httpwwwimdbcomtitlett1 183919 Ryan W 2012 Learning to SeeA guide to Visual Literacy Bridgepoint Education
