Week 8 dql Both quotYoung Goodman Brownquot and quotAmerican Historyquot fall into the quotinnocence and Experiencequot category of our textbook Each literary work examines the life a person whether real or ctional who39s life is changed by a single experience This change took each character from a life of innocence to one of new experience In both cases the loss of innocence resulted in a negative outcome for the characters a level of sadness previously unknown by Brown or Cofer ln quotYoung Goodman Brownquot the main character Brown has a vision whether real or a dream of the inherent sin of people Brown initially has a perception of people as being generally good in nature but inclined to stray toward evil Goodman sets out on a trip through the forest with the intention of setting right the wrong of another member of his town At some point during this journey he envisions everyone in his town including his innocent seeming wife participating in a Satanic ritual The rest of the story quickly describes the rest of his life as one of cynical understanding of the nature of people In quotAmerican Historyquot the author Judith Cofer has a similar experience The story begins with her preteen crush on a schoolmate a white boy In her innocence she falls to understand that the racial division between her and Eugene may be a barrier to any possible romance It is not until she is told by Eugene39s mother that she cannot study with Eugene and she should go away that her nai39ve view of the world is shattered This experience causes her to quotgrow upquot in a single day coincidentally this happens to be the same day as Kennedy39s assassination a day of great loss of innocence for many people It is difficult to decide which author more effectively illustrates the theme of quotinnocence and experiencequot Each author uses very different style tone and other literary devices to describe his or her story quotYoung Goodman Brownquot occurs in a time period which is harder for me to relate but the author has a vivid imagination and uses a very descriptive writing style quotAmerican Historyquot on the other hand is a realistic tale of racial differences in a more recent time However Cofer39s writing style is more matteroffact and presented in a less dramatic and colorful way If I had to chose between the two I would say that quotYoung Goodman Brownquot probably does a betterjob of illustrating the theme simply because the author39s use of literary devices is more prominent and te irony at the end is more unexpected
