Behavior 2 Biological Criminal Behavior Crimes happen every day and everywhere by many different types of people Research has been proven that genes can in uence criminal behavior Biology is confirmed to play a big role in an individual s criminality behavior by genetic evidence Some believe that desire to commit crimes may be inherited and that criminal inclinations are genetically based Research has been done extensively to discover evidence that would support this claim that has been made by intellectuals Criminal deeds have always been a motivation due to the debate of nature and nurture Studies have been done in regards to this debate that has resulted in a conclusion that both genes and environment do play apart in the criminality of a person Genes do not cause behavior but they affect tendencies to behave in certain ways Nurnberger Aug 10 2006 para 3 Research states that crime can be collaborated between the atmosphere and genes The human behavioral system is neither environmentally or genetically determined but does have potentials that come through interaction of the environment and genes Owen pg87 Biology was an important factor in the case of Andrea Yates Mental illness ran strongly in Andrea Yate s immediate family She had two siblings who suffered from postpartum depression and a brother who was diagnosed with bipolar Andrea was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis after her first child was born This caused Andrea to experience hallucinations of stabbings McLellan 2006 Things got worse for her after the births of her next three children which took place one right after the other Resulting from her children being born at a rapid pace her hormone levels remained imbalanced Mix the imbalanced hormone levels with the refusal of taking her prescribed medication and mental disorders disaster was about to happen Biological Criminal Behavior 3 On July 2 1964 in Huston Texas was born a sweet little girl named Andrea Pia Kennedy She was raised Catholic and is the youngest of five siblings Andrea attended Milby High was shy quiet very smart and graduated in 1982 as valedictorian of her class Andrea became a certified nurse after graduating from the University of Texas Health Science Center Within those years Andrea got married becoming Andrea Yates to Rusty Yates in 1993 and gave birth to five children Paul Yates Mary Yates John Yates Noah Yates and Luke Yates About 19 years after her high school graduation on June 20 2001 to be exact Andrea drowned all of her children one by one in the bathtub of her home It was said that Andrea had suffered from depression and postpartum psychosis and that postnatal mental illness led her to drown her children McLellan 2006 amp Meyers 2003 In the case overview it shows Yates behavior before and after the crime she committed by drowning her children The overview also shows behaviors and biological effects that contributed as being a psychopath allowing a better understanding of how such terrible crimes like this can happen Background on Andrea Yates Andrea Yates or Andrea Pia Kennedy was born on July 2 1964 in Houston Texas She attended Milby High School Houston Texas in 1982 where she was elected the class valedictorian captain of the swim team and an officer on the National Honor Society Andrew underwent 2 years of a prenursing program at the University of Houston and then graduated in 1986 from the University of Texas School of Nursing in Houston Between 1986 1994 she worked as a registered nurse at the University of Houston MD Anderson Cancer Center Andrea never dated anyone until she was of 23 years of age she was known for being reserved and initiating conversations She met her husband in 1993 when they lived in the Biological Criminal Behavior 4 same apartment complex After suffering from a broken relationship she eventually began seeing Rusty Yates They were married and moved in together on April 17 1993 most of their time was spent together and in religious study or prayer They were commonly heard proclaiming to have as many children as nature would provide In their eighth year of marriage the Yates family had four boys and one girl Andrea stopped her routine exercises jogging and swimming after their second child family and friends say she began to grow reclusive Many suggest the fact that she decided to home school her children only fed the isolation and depression Their living conditions were very challenging Rusty worked in Florida in 1996 and the family moved into a 38foot travel trailer in Seminole Andrea was pregnant with their third child in 1996 but suffered a miscarriage In 1997 they moved back to Houston and lived in their trailer in order to live light according to Rusty Eventually Rusty decided to buy a 350 foot renovated bus for their residence At this time Luke was born which became their fourth child Their living conditions began to grow extremely tight in space which apparently led to the surface of Andrea s Insanity In June 1999 Rusty found her chewing on her fingers and shaking involuntarily The following day she attempted her first suicide by overdosing on pills and was hospitalized She was released on June 24th and prescribed antidepressants This was the beginning of her downward spiral as she was admitted another time for 10 days prescribed with Haldol and put in outpatient care Mary their youngest child was born in March of 2000 at Rusty s request despite being warned previously against having another child On March 12 of the next year Biological Criminal Behavior 5 Andrea s father died and immediately digressed her mental state She began mutilating herself stopped talking refused liquids and would not feed her daughter Her time was spent compulsively reading the Bible and in a frantic state By the end of March she was readmitted into a different hospital because of her mental health but as usual she was released because Dr Mohammed Saeed did not feel she was psychotic In May she returned to Dr Saeed for another 10 days Dr Saeed s advice was to think positive thoughts before releasing her again Two days after being released Andrea Yates began putting her plan into action According to Crimeaboutcom her plan of killing her children consumed her for the next 2 years Andrea Pia Yates Case Overview Andrea Yates methodically drowned her five children in the bathtub of her home on June 20 2001 around 9am after her husband left for work He was a NASA engineer at the Johnson Space Center McLellan 2006 Yates then phoned her husband to come home and phoned the police telling them that she had just killed her children Andrea while in jail mentioned that she had planned on killing her children for two years because she felt she was not a good enough mother according to cartoon characters on her television and her children were not developing correctly She also stated that she felt she had been marked by Satan and in order to save her children from Hell was to kill them She believed that once she was punished for her children s deaths Satan then would be destroyed McLellan 2006 Yates has battled with postpartum psychosis and depression for many years Yates case was tried using a legal test for sanity which is under the M Naghten Rules Yates case came to an end in 2002 when she was sentenced to life in prison and convicted of capital murder She was able to get parole only after serving at least 40 years in prison however as a result of an appeal her conviction was Biological Criminal Behavior 6 overturned on July 26 2006 Yates was found not guilty by the Texas Jury on grounds for insanity Instead of prison Yates was committed to a high security mental hospital located in Vernon Texas About six months later in early 2007 Yates was transferred to Kerrville Texas to a low security mental health facility where she remains to this day and is fighting to have outside group meeting with other patients from the facility While there Yates has taken up an interest in arts and crafts and she makes aprons and greeting cards and they are sold anonymously to help fund the Yates Children Memorial Fund Hlavaty2014 Andrea Yates behavior before the crime Education and Achievements Andrea Kennedy Yates graduated from Milby High School in 1982 was class valedictorian was an began to surface soon after her fourth child was born and after living in a cramped 350 square foot bus that Rusty purchased from their minister Michael Woroniecki Michael Woroniecki religious views in uenced the Yates but more so Andrea One sermon that she took to heart was the sermon Woroniecki preached about how bad mothers who are going to Biological Criminal Behavior 7 hell create bad children who will go to hell Montaldo 2014 Soon after Andre s action began to worry her family Andrea tried committing suicide for the first time by overdosing on medication on June 16 1999 While at the Methodist Hospital psychiatric unit she was diagnosed with a depressive disorder prescribed an antidepressant and then sent home Things got much worse after that McLellan 2006 Andre began to selfmutilate after not taking her medication as prescribed She began to hallucinate and thought that cartoon charters were speaking to her children and herself She felt her children were eating too much and so she began to starve them Her psychiatrist Dr Starbranch went unnotified of her actions and a few weeks later on July 20 Andrea tried to take her own life by putting a knife to her neck Meyers 2003 After the second suicide attempt Andrea was hospitalized for 10 days and Dr Starbranch warned Rusty and Andrea that more psychotic behavior could result from having another baby Andrea was released prescribed Haldol and placed on outpatient care Things looked up for a short while The Yates had moved from their cramped bus home into a new house and Andrea began seeing a psychiatrist Dr Mohammed Saeed Andrea became pregnant in March of 2000 stopped taking the Haldol and Mary was born November 30 2000 That following year Andrea s mental health took a drastic downfall after her father passed away on March 12 2001 Andrea would continuously and frantically read her bible refused to feed Mary stopped talking with others and began to mutilate herself again Montaldo 2014 Andrea was again hospitalized at the end of March She was treated brie y with Haldol but Dr Mohammed Saeed stopped it because he felt she was not psychotic He told her to see a psychologist and to think positive thoughts Montaldo 2014 Biological Criminal Behavior 8 It was shortly after her last visit with Dr Mohammed Saeed that she put her thoughts into action and murdered her children In conclusion after researching the case of Andrea Yates I believe her crime were committed because of mental illness bad brain chemistry and genetic traits which was part of her family history References Hlavaty C
