PSY 270 Axia College Material Appendix D Psychological and Psychophysiological Stress Disorders Respond to the following 1 Stress can be the root cause of psychological disorders Name four symptoms shared by acute and posttraumatic stress disorders The four symptoms of acute and posttraumatic stress disorder are avoidance reexperiencing the traumatic event reduced responsiveness and increased arousal anxiety and guilt What life events are most likely to trigger a stress disorder There are various life events that can lead to the development of a stress disorder These events include combat natural disasters victimization and terrorism Traumatic events do not always result in a diagnosable psychological disorder What factors determine how a person may be affected by one such event There are several key factors that in uence how a person may be affected by a traumatic event There are biological and genetic factors that are often involved and the individual s personality is also a factor Childhood experiences can in uence a person s reaction to a traumatic event as well Social support and the severity of the actual trauma will also be determining factors on how the person will be affected What are the four stages in meeting the psychological needs of disaster Victims The four stage approach in meeting the psychological needs of disaster victims are normalizing people s responses to the disaster encouraging the expression of emotions anxiety fear etc teaching selfhelping skills and providing referrals What is the link between personality styles and heart disease People with a type A personality style are often very angry impatient competitive and stressed out which can raise their risk of coronary heart disease heart attack Type B personality styles are often more relaxed and easygoing than their type A counterparts which studies have shown places them at a lower risk of developing heart disease PSY 270 6 List and brie y describe four psychological treatments for physical disorders Relaxation training This treatment focuses on being able to relax one s muscles at will which is said to prevent and relieve various illnesses caused by anxiety andor stress Medication may also accompany this treatment Biofeedback This type of treatment consists of individuals being hooked up to a machine that produces readings about involuntary body activities which can help these individuals learn to control such activities Meditation Meditating is a practice helps individuals let go of the stress that may be building up Meditation can consist of focusing on one s breathing or on repeating a specific word or phrase to help the individual narrow their concentration Cognitive interventions This type of treatment consists of changing the patient s attitude or response towards their illness which is said to help patients deal with issues like pain headaches and cancer treatments PSY 270
