REL 134 Week 5 DQ1 How has the idea of the sacred or holy created con ict between these three Western religious traditions Although all three of the religions Christianity Judaism and Islam can be traced back the Hebrew father Abraham these three religions differ in what they consider to be holy because the emphasis they put on different parts of history after Abraham39s life With all three religions having the same original foundation it is very easy to expect con ict to take place between two or more of them Each religion will naturally feel betrayed or confused by the other two religions not recognizing what the devotee believes is the most important part of the history including people events and perspectives To many Christians it is offensive thatJews and Muslims do not accept the deity ofJesus Christ or recognize his sacri ce as worth of acceptance The same perspective Christians have ofJesus and the Messiah can give rise to feelings of offense in practitioners ofJudaism Muslims obviously must feel that Christians and Jews are both misled because they do not give any recognition to the authority and position of Muhammad as a prophet sent from god Some of the problems between modern Jews and Muslims can probably be traced back to the two male children of Abraham Isaac and Ismael While the Jewish people are descendants of Isaac many of the Arabian Muslims can be genealogically traced back to Ishmael While Ishmael was the rstborn son he did not receive the birthright that was normally given to the eldest because of Abraham39s favor for the mother of Isaac From these differences in theology and history much friction could be expected between followers of the three different religious practices While on religion has central ideas based on one idea or what they consider to be truth the other two often consider the central beliefs of the one to be misleading and inaccurate This can be said for any combination of these three religions Molloy2010 Reference Molloy M 2010 Experiencing the world39s religions Tradition challenge and change 5th ed New York NY McGrawHill
