Running head PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE Preparing to Conduct Business Research Part One Team A Melissa Lister Hector Alvarado Jesse Salgado Terra Postelle Terry Molina RES 351 January 29 2013 John Carroll PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE 2 Preparing to Conduct Business Research Part One Team A Introduction Dell Inc is an American global information technology corporation based in Round Rock Texas bearing the name of its founder Michael Dell Google Maps 2013 The company operates in four segments Large Enterprise Public Small and Medium Business and Consumer The company is well known for its consumer segment that focuses on delivering technology experiences of entertainment mobility gaming and design via desktops laptops ultra books tablets and office supplies such as multifunctional printers home entertainment such as TVs and home theater and much more Dell designs develops manufactures markets sells and supports a wide range of products solutions and services This multinational company is currently considering another direction to take their corporation by going into the private sector which will be researched throughout this paper What are the Research Questions There are a few basic research questions that can be asked before the continuation of the research project These questions include 1 what is the direction of Dell 2 what authority does Microsoft have if invested privately 3 what is Microsoft s agenda once they have a hand in Dell and 4 what does Dell s future hold privately These questions are for a research project to determine the best interest of Dell Would Dell be better off as public or private company According to Hugh Johnson who was interviewed on Breakout stated that it would be better for Dell to get out of the PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE 3 public and into being a private company would be better for them They have a lot of cash on hand and going private could help them spend that cash Macke 2013 Trying to understand what Microsoft s intention once invested in Dell is important because Microsoft buys out manufacturing companies and could put Dell out of business Questions aroused on what will happen if Dell privatizes is a concern for investors consumers and employees Investors might not thing Dell will carry on to be profitable Consumers might have to pay premium prices and employees could face unemployment or downgrades What are the Hypotheses The Direction of Dell is to go private and to join with Microsoft and other partners since sales have dropped dramatically and even though Mr Dell has become a millionaire they need to take a new approach to stay in business Dell does not want to take advantage of its shareholders therefore Dell is researching to find the best rate to sell their stock shares lf Microsoft joins with Dell they will own a percentage of the company and will be able to make millions Microsoft and Dell39s agenda is to start the company from the ground up customer service sales and creating new merchandise With other partners being involved there are more opportunities and more minds involved to extend the products with new technology and begin to expand rapidly Aleski 2013 What Variables are to be Considered PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE 4 Independent variable Dependent variable Research studies indicate that successful new product development has an influence on the stock market price of a company That is the more successful the new product turns out to be the higher will be the stock market price of that firm Therefore the success of the new product is the independent variable and stock market price the dependent variable The degree of perceived success of the new product developed will explain the variance in the stock market price of the company It is important to remember that there are no preordained variables waiting to be discovered out there that are automatically assigned to be independent or dependent It is in fact the product of the researcher s imagination demonstrated convincingly In the business context profit is a dependent variable because it depends on the economy sales and expenses Product quality depends on the manufacturing and design processes The number of employees laid off during a recession depends partly on declining business revenues Government tax revenue depends on customer income business profits capital gains and other variables Independent variables that affect sales include customer demographics store location and weather Customer demographics include age occupation family status income level and gender These factors affect what a customer needs which affects sales and ultimately profits A store located in a densely populated metropolitan area may have higher sales than a store in a sparsely populated rural area Similarly customers may go shopping when the weather is pleasant but few would venture PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE 5 outside in stormy or snowy weather Some variables have a circular relationship with sales For example sales depend on advertising but the level of advertising expenses also depends on sales What Ethical Considerations Must You Take Into Account There are many ethical considerations that must be taken into account For instance what are the differences between Microsoft s ways of doing things compared to Dell s way of doing things Their codes of conduct may be very different from each other or they could be very similar If the two companies are to merge then they would have to get together before hand and iron out all the differences Discuss the Signi cance Scope Magnitude and Feasibility of Finding a Solution to the Issue Opportunity or Problem For this research paper it would be beneficial to use qualitative research because the goal of our research is to achieve an indepth understanding of Dells direction potentially going into the private sector and Microsoft true agenda with Dell Most of our findings will be left for our own interpretation because our research seeks to develop understanding through detailed descriptions and building our own theories De ne the Purpose of the Results Michael Dell founded Dell in 1984 and was a major success and is now worth 16 billion Dell39s sales have dropped due to the high demand of Apple lPhones and lPads which has replaced notebooks In the past year Dell has lost a 3rd of its value and 23 in the last 5 years Mr Dell wants to team up with Silver Lake Microsoft and other potential wealthy Asian investor partners Mr Dell would lose a 16 of his PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART ONE 6 ownership a stake value of 35 Million Dell has been negotiating so they can go private and does not want to go out cheap Dell has been looking into selling the stock shares anywhere from 1350 1425Del does not want to take advantage of shareholders so he hired another bank to work out a good deal Conclusion Preparing to conduct business research using the qualitative methodologies focuses on understanding and interpretation PREPARING TO CONDUCT BUSINESS RESEARCH PART
