CheckPoint Mary s Battle Dhune School For the sake of this CheckPoint discussion I chose to use the following categories related to Mary Because Mary is a middleaged woman she may have difficulty adapting with positivity to her terminal illness Diagnosed in 2001 with her first cancer undergoing two mastectomies and chemotherapy the cancer spread to her lung and spine At such a young age assuming this is now 2008 Mary has been battling this disease since she was 35 years old To add to her struggle she is now facing brain cancer which holds a poor prognosis An older individual perhaps in their 70 s or 80 s may be more accepting of these types of illnesses as they live out the latter stages of life In Mary s case she may be dealing with emotional issues such as anger about her situation which can hinder her adaptation success Mary seems to have adapted to her previous illnesses well if examining her compliance with treatment plans However the fact that she refuses to deal with past issues which are painful may suggest she has a problem facing reality with acceptance and with problem solving The refusal to implement a living will further suggests Mary s adaptation success will be limited In my opinion the failure to perform such a crucial task shows signs of denial I believe if Mary were to complete a living will and make plans regarding end of life care she may find greater acceptance of her situation Finally Mary obviously has some social support network but I feel there is much room for improvement in this regard Her family is distant she has no companionship from a partner and When undergoing treatment Mary must be careful not to encounter germs Which can make her sicker She seems to be somewhat isolated With the exception of the church attendance This lack of social support is further going to hinder Mary s ability to successfully adapt
