Identify a social problem in your city or state You can easily identify one by browsing a local newspaper or watching the evening news Respond to the following questions Who are the losers and gainers What are the direct and indirect costs What are the causes and consequences I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin A huge social problem is drunk driving The Gainers are the people drinking and driving who after multiple citations are still getting in cars after they have consumed yet even more alcohol Not only have they not been taken off of the street they are not imprisoned nor held in custody and minutes hours and days after the last arrest they are back at it again They are simply winning because they have no reason to stop They have proven that they don t care about other people in the society yet time after time and again and again they are back out injuring more and more people every year The indirect losers are the taX payers the insurance companies the parents or families of the injured Victim and anyone else how pays insurance or anyone who Chooses to take a Chance driving on the road The gainers are the drunk drivers the bars they are drinking in the lawyers the companies who make the alcohol and even auto repair shops and towing companies The list goes on The indirect cost is the price of health care for the Victim every taX payer and even those who pay for car insurance and health insurance The direct cost is the physical pain of the Victim the cost of the health care for the patient the cost for treatment for the person drunk driving should they decide that they do need help The causes are l the problem is escalated in my state not only because of the laws surrounding alcohol but the loop holes and inconsistencies in the judicial system as well as the amount of establishments that serve alcohol More and more people are getting hurt by those who Chose to drive while under the in uence of alcohol In this example the losers are those who are affected by the persons driving under the in uence The consequences are pain of the Victim the family s emotional problems Higher auto and health insurance rates from everyone
