Thanks and good luck!!! :-) Week Three DQ #2 Due Week Three Day 4 What is selfesteem? How does selfesteem change in adolescence? Selfesteem is how an individual feels about him or herself. It encompasses aspects of self respect, acceptance, and selfconfidence that a person feels. Selfesteem is an extremely important aspect of leading a functional life. It helps people set and achieve goals, develop meaningful relationships, and become independent and confident individuals. People who have low selfesteem often struggle to accept themselves. They may feel as though they are not good enough or that they just don’t fit in. Those with healthy levels of selfesteem are confident with who they are and what they stand for. Teenagers often experience a selfesteem rollercoaster because of all the changes that they are going through both physically and mentally. Puberty is a time of immense changes in an adolescent’s life, which can take a negative toll on his or her selfconfidence. Teens struggle to accept themselves while also struggling to fit in with the surrounding world. Hormones fluctuate as the teen progresses through puberty and sexual characteristics begin to develop, which may impact the teens sense of selfesteem and make them feel somewhat awkward. Peer pressure also becomes a more prominent issue during adolescence as well, which can attribute to issues of selfesteem as well. Most teenagers are constantly struggling for social acceptance, which can in turn affect their selfesteem.
