U A day in a life Axia College of the University of Phoenix The Sperm and the Egg Even though men and women have different genitalia and sex organs the bodies main purpose of these is fertilization Within the thesis we will be describing the anatomy and functions of the male and female sexual organs and the role that sex organs play in fertilization Also there will be tracking the movements of the sperm and the egg from their development to fertilization Many may remember from childhood discovering their strange external parts of their body Over the years some may have experienced teasing from the opposite sex due to the obvious development and outright curiosity Most are curious of the opposite sex and would gladly examine as a result of that curiosity From birth a female has the necessary tools to one day succeed in fertilization Most do not know that newborn girls already have all of the ova that she will ever need pg 62 The external sex organs are all similar in nature all are unique and different in appearance The female external sex organs are called the pudendum or vulva The mons veneris the libia majora and minora the clitoris and the vaginal opening are all the parts referred to as the vulva pg 63 The mons vereris is the fatty tissue that is visible from the outside when standing up This is located above the urethral and is covered by pubic hair after puberty The main purpose of this is to protect from pressure on the pubic bone and can The female GXtemal organs consist of many delicate parts also produce stimulation if caressed The labia majora and the labia minora work together a IKHJI rill I5 fa aquot a i Psiii pubic hair39s 39 w R I I win35 to protect and cover the urethral clitoris and vaginal labia openings Both the labia majora and the labia minora a anus The Sperm and the Egg vary in appearance in some woman but serve almost the same purpose including sexual stimulation and pleasure The clitoris is the female equivalent to the penis When aroused the clitoris becomes filled with blood and becomes erect Because of the rich supply of nerve endings it is very sensitive to stimulation and varies in size similar to a penis pg 65 The vaginal opening is the sex organ that houses the penis during intercourse and the means of exit for childbirth and menstruation During sexual arousal the vagina expands in length and width but resembles a collapsed muscular tube when at rest pg 71 The vagina consists of both internal and external parts and connect the uterus to the outside of the body Brichford 2009 The vagina is often called the birth canal and is where the penis deposits the semen from ejaculation during sex The internal sex organs not only involve the vagina but also the ovaries fallopian tubes the uterus and the cervix Each has their own responsibility in relations to reproduction The ovaries are responsible for producing estrogen and eggs which are released into the fallopian tubes during ovulation If fertilization is unsuccessful the egg will be washed away during menstruation The fallopian tubes are where fertilization occurs and the fertilized egg will travel to the uterus for implantation The Sperm and the Egg Often referred to as the womb the uterus is what holds the baby during pregnancy If fertilization does not occur the lining of the uterus will be excreted during menstruation through the cerVix The cerVix is the lower part of the uterus and is connected to the vagina This organ allows semen into the uterus and excretes blood from menstruation Just like their female counterpart males also have extraordinary functions of their sex organs as well as their functions in fertilization The function of the penis is Male Repm urtiye System much like that of the vagina a sex organ and used in sexual intercourse pg 109 Unlike females males have most of their reproductive organs Visible from the outside of the body These organs consist of the penis scrotum and the testicles The penis consist of three parts the root which is what attaches the penis to the wall of the abdomen the body which is responsible for an erection and the glans which is the part at the end of the penis that is shaped like a cone Because of the increased size during an erection the skin is loose and elastic so it can accommodate the growing state When a penis is erect the urethra blocks urine so only semen can be ejaculated The scrotum is the hanging sac of skin that houses the testicles The scrotum is what controls the temperature for the testicles and keeps it slightly cooler than that of the rest of the body WebMD 2009 The testicles are responsible for generating sperm as well as producing testosterone The Sperm and the Egg The internal organs for a male are the epididymis vas deferens ejaculatory ducts seminal vesicles urethra prostate gland and the bulbourethral glands During arousal sperm is released into the vas deferens by the epididymis which matures the sperm awaiting ejaculation The prostate gland and the bulbourethral gland have uids that contribute to the maturity of the sperm Once the sperm is ejaculated into the vagina it makes the journey to the egg This race turns into the survival of the fittest and the sperm act as if they are trying to win the prize Through this hostile environment the strongest sperm will undergo a transformation that will enable them to mature completely This process is known as capacitation Usually within a few hours healthy mature sperm will begin to make their anticipated duty of possible fertilization Once reaching the egg the sperm will try to penetrate the egg which will hopefully complete the fertilization process and result in the ultimate finish and prize an embryo As one can see the male and female internal and external seX organs are more complicated in the process that relates to the sperm and the egg Even though men and women do have different genitalia and seX organs the goal is the same By identifying the different anatomies one can get a better understanding of how the process of fertilization occurs in the hopes of better understanding oneself better References Bowen R 2000 Fertilization
