WEEK3 DQlQ Some students think that they do not have much of a cultural background because they were not born outside of the United States or because they do not speak another language The truth is that everyone has a culture This can be in regards to your race ethnicity gender age nationality religion sexual orientation ability etc Take some time to write about your own culture and share with us what makes you who you are Try to not focus on just one aspect of yourself but try to utilize as many cultural elements as possible Also address why culture is important in communication How does your culture affect your communication with others DQlA Being a product of an allAmerican family I fall into the category of a person exhibiting individualism In being an individualist I am able to speak freely and independently as well as be competitive selfreliant and basically be my own person with my own values and opinions Allow me to elaborate Being a male in my early thirties I do not speak text or type the way someone who is perhaps fifteen would type With every generation new words and trends develop Growing up words such as rad or Wicked cool were words that consumed my vocabulary I would use these in almost every conversation Now when I speak to someone of a younger generation I hear the word like or ohemgee a lot The age gap has created the difference in communication because different trends set the pace for each generation Another way that my personal culture sets me apart from another culture could be my race My Wife likes to listen to rap music Being a Caucasian male I cannot relate to some of the terms used in rap music I hear phrases like gimme that swag or words like ya knaw Whatta mean and the dialect from the words sometimes throws me off Although the words that I hear in these rap songs are probably words I use every day they are said with a different dialect or twist to them to make them sound different So where I may hear them say I m wearing ice What they mean is they are wearing lots of diamonds or jewelry Those are words I would not have used to tell someone I was wearing lots of diamonds The difference in the culture there is dialect or pronunciation Let me address yet another way culture defines my communication When I am talking about a crazy event in my life being a Christian I do not use the Lord s name in vein Some people would use it Whereas I would say oh my gosh My religion sets the tone for the language I use in my communication I do not like to swear Many of my friends and peers do however When I talk to them sometimes I notice that they catch themselves saying a swear word and they will try to retract it apologize for saying it or take their time speaking in order to come up with alternative words to use In our text it states we strive to maintain a positive position in the eyes of other people with whom we communicate or to respect the position of others Sole 2011 So not only does my culture affect my communication but sometimes also how others communicate with me Sole K 2011Making connections Understanding interpersonal communication San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc httpscontentashfordedu DQ2Q Some of the work from communication expert James McCorskey has been very in uential in research within the interpersonal communication eld He is especially well known for his communication research scales Go to the Willingness to Listen website and complete the Willingness to Listen Measure Follow the directions on the website to score your results Based on your results do you have a high moderate or low willingness to listen to others How do you think your willingness to listen score could impact your interpersonal relationships Do you think that this measure was accurate for you What about the measure do you think was or was not accurate DQ2A Based on the results from the test I have a high willingness to listen to others I would agree that I am a very gregarious person My score was a ninetysix Being a good listener likely allows me to gain more respect from my peers and employees I have done many Karrass training classes and listening has been a focal point in several of them I have learned through many seminars that when people find you are listening to them they will listen to you as well Listening creates a comfort for the speaker that allows them to fully express what they are trying to say When I listen to what people are saying I find it easy to adapt to their speaking if they are speaking in an excited tone Now even when they are speaking in a mundane or low tone or they are boring me to tears it is still important for me to try and understand what they want me to hear I do my best to comprehend the topic IfI do not understand something I always ask This is also a key part of listening On the reverse side of speaking listening has also proven beneficial because it has taught me different speaking techniques When I listen to people speak I find out what makes their speaking boring or exciting and I try to incorporate the positive in uences into my speaking as well When I enter a meeting and the speaker is speaking monotone or not getting his or her point across it gives me the impression that they are either disinterested in what they are speaking on or they are not fully prepared to speak on the topic When I speak I make sure I show the audience that I am excited about the topic and they should be too If I get them excited about it the productivity is bound to increase Additionally I make sure that I have factual data in my speaking in order to give validity to what I am saying I have picked up on these things just by listening to others speak I think that this measurement was accurate I think I am a pretty good listener I am however always striving for ways to improve I do my best when I am speaking to someone for the first time to not let my first impression of that person depict my views for them going forward I also think I have done a very good job not stereotyping people when I am speaking to them I like to make my own opinions of views of people over time Just because someone has a dry personality does not mean they do not have a lot of important information they could share with me I am normally the type that will be the icebreaker in the conversation It is just my personality to be the first one to strike up a conversation or say something witty in order to gain someone s attention and interest I have found that when speaking to people it is best to ask questions about them Almost everyone likes to talk about themselves their life or their family It is a great way to build rapport with a customer In our text it states Speech mirroring consists of paying attention to how the other person is speaking how fast and how loudly they talk and the pattern of give and take in the conversation Sole 2011 I have always done this in conversation It allows me to get a feel for whom they are and how I need to adapt to the way they speak in order to connect with them I think this test in itself was a way for me to see that I do still find listening boring if the speaker is not adapting to me This tells me that I need to find more ways to be able to adapt to the speaker I think overall this test was very informative in how I listen to others Sole K
