COM 150 Complete Course DQ s Weeks 19 Week 1 Discussion Question 1 Fact refers to information verifiable through evidence Opinion refers to an impression open to dispute Go to the History Channel Web site at httpwwwhistorycom Click Video at the top of the Web page then type Speeches into the Search All Videos bar or copy and paste the following link into a web browser httpwwwhistorycommediado search Termspeechesampactionsearch Select a speech brie y describe the speech and explain whether the speech is fact or opinion Respond to the posts of your classmates by asking what they found interesting about the speech they selected I chose the speech where FDR Fra nklin Dela no Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan This speech is definitely fact due to the information given The EX President went over facts of the intrusions to the United States and other countries committed by a common enemy He stated how the attack was carried out and that there had to have been prior planning before the attack The speech was given on December 12 1941 and the attack to our nation was carried out on December 7 1941 hence before the speech was given facts were gathered to come to a conclusion that we were at war Here is a direct link just in case someone wants to listen to his speech httpwwwhistorvcomvideodo namespeeches Week 1 DQ 2 In what ways are expository essays similar to business communication In what ways are they different What part do facts play in the expository essay What part does opinion play Explain your answers Ask for more information regarding areas of disagreement when you respond to your classmates posts The rst things that come to mind are the differences between business communications and expository essays During the process of writing a business communication one does not do any prewriting or drafting Both of these are used in the expository essay writings Then there is the part of creating a thesis for the essay this is not done in business communications because there is no need for it In any business document in can be from the opinion of someone or facts to an idea given there is no real need for it to be both In the essay the use of an opinion is going to be backed by the facts needed to support them Some of the similarities between the two are the fact they both need to be professionally written without any errors and that the documents in question are written inclusively In both types of documents there is a need for an opening statement describing what kind of information is to follow along with some sort of conclusion or wrap up Week 3 DQ 1 Post your response to the following What is your expository essay topic Why did you select this topic Why is this topic important for your audience The topic I chose for my final project is Gun Control Not just the broad part of the subject but the effects of gun control laws on private owners of high caliber ri es This subject has been very controversial over the past couple of decades so I am positive there is plenty of information out there waiting to be discovered and redistributed in my essay The reason I have decided to do this particular topic is because it hits close to home Ever since I was a small boy in northern California I have used firearms starting with my first a 22 caliber Marlin given to me when I turned seven years old by my father After that when I turned eleven years old I received my first high power ri e a Mossberg 30 06 in my opinion one of the best hunting ri es ever made My entire family hunts and owns ri es pistols and even compound bows These types of laws will affect entire generations of my family therefore I am very interested in this subject I am not sure if the topic itself is going to be important to my audience at the beginning However I am going to try and prove the importance of this topic to everyone the owner of these types of weapons and also the ones who want to try and prohibit the ownership of these ri es Week 3 DQ 2 Post your response to the following What Web sites do you normally frequent Are these Web sites credible When is credibility more important and when is it less important Support your answers with specific examples What questions might you ask in order to determine the credibility of online sources When I venture out to the World Wide Web I usually only visit the sites needed to pay my bills or check out the news The decision made to pay bills online was not an easy one however There are sites out there that claim to be affiliated with certain utility providers but charge an extra fee sometimes hidden when you use their services For this reason we did a lot of research before choosing the site we now use The other sites I visit are from our local news paper and local television stations in order see the news for the day The reason I rely on multiple sources to get the news is the variances in each author s story By reviewing the differences in the stories I get a much clearer picture of what transpired making it a better over all news article Without doing this some story lines are left with holes in them making me ask more questions than what I had to begin with Now whether or not these sites are credible I would have to say yes but in their own individual way They have credible stories which are reported on with the available information they receive and not making judgments or giving opinions on what happened yet their information sometimes is not complete When dealing with web sites it is important to me to know if they have credibility with what they do or if it is some kind of scam being pulled of Being able to research sites credibility allows one to avoid danger zones on the net The only time I think that credibility is not needed is when someone is just chatting over the internet or watching videos for you tube or other peer to peer sites Week 5 DQ 1 Select one of the following topics America s top corporations are successful for a variety of reasons Scientists have discovered human remains thought to be more than 2 million years older than Lucy a skeleton found in Ethiopia A healthful diet and regular exercise will not only improve health but also lower health care costs Answer the following regarding the topic you chose What kinds of supporting paragraphs examples details definitions analysis division and classification process analysis comparisoncontrast causeeffect argument are appropriate to support this topic Explain your answer Respond to classmates posts by asking for more information if you disagree with or do not understand a response The topic I selected was Scientists have discovered human remains thought to be more than 2 million years older than Lucy a skeleton found in Ethiopia The supporting paragraphs I feel that are appropriate for supporting this idea are as follows Details definitions analysis division and classification process analysis comparison and contrast and lastly argument The reasons I chose these supporting paragraphs are 1 There needs to be clear details supporting this topic in order to show proper validity to the statement Any open doors or weak links in the details can cause havoc with what the scientists are trying to prove 2 The need for details is in my opinion pertinent to holding up ones side of the argument Without details of the described human remains others in the scientific community will probably rule out even a remote possibility of this being true 3 There is also a need for an analysis of the make up of the skeleton the location where it was discovered and even a carbon date test to determine how old it might actually be 4 There should also be a process analysis done to explain the exact steps taken and how they are relevant to the case at hand With this the scientists who made the discovery can make a stronger argumentative case which might allow them to sway the opposing side 5 Comparison will be needed to show if the skeleton in question resembles Lucy in any way if not then a contrast of the two skeletons will be needed to show the differences Either way this needs to be done to try and show concrete proof that this skeleton is a human sapiens descendant or not some form of new animal species found 6 An argumentative paragraph is definitely needed to try and support the possibility of the skeleton in question actually being that old If this paragraph is well thought out and presented right it might possibly change the minds of the entire scientific community Week 5 DQ 2 Post your response to the following What is your thesis How do you plan to support this thesis Review the concept of fallacies you learned in a previous course Suggest ways to avoid fallacies in your thesis for your expository essay Respond to your classmates posts by asking for more information or suggesting additional ways they can support their thesis statements Furthermore suggest ways they can avoid fallacies in their thesis statements Even though high powered rifles are used in assignations and some crimes gun control laws affect everyone including private owners and collectors not just the criminals and have no real affect on lowering crime The NRA sites I have reviewed have an extensive amount of data on this issue and create a unique opportunity to travel backwards in time to examine all sides of gun control Knowing that the NRA is primarily bias on this subject helps me by sorting out the information pertinent to my essay and allows me the opportunity to remove any information considered bias They keep records of the actual events of most all assignations and crimes committed with high powered ri es hand guns and even knife attacks The NRA s in depth explanations of new laws and old laws on gun control and the reasons why they were voted into action or vetoed will help me make this essay the best I can The only fallacy I can think of that I avoided using would be the genetic fallacy This one uses the history or origin of something to sway people By not using the second amendment in my thesis I was able to avoid this fallacy Week 7 DQ 1 Post your response to the following Select one of the essays from the Examples of Effective Introductions section in Effective Introductions and Conclusions Which article did you choose What type of introduction does the writer use What is the impact of that kind of introduction in this essay The article I chose is Family Ties The type of introduction used here is a question The author starts off by asking a question to catch and hold the attention of the readers By asking a question but not answering it right away helps draw your audience in and almost makes them want to keep reading I think that the impact of this introduction is so overpowering that after reading it one is eager to find out why it is hard for many African Americans to find their sense of identity Week 7 DQ 2 Post your response to the following Select one of the essays from the Examples of Effective Conclusions section in Effective Introductions and Conclusions Which article did you choose What kind of conclusion does the writer use What is the impact of that kind of conclusion in this essay The article I chose was The R Word I feel that the author used the conclusion Make a prediction or recommend actions for the readers to take The reason I think that this is the one he used is because the author makes the prediction that in another twenty years the AAMR will probably be changing their name once again In my opinion this type of ending leaves one hanging you do not really get a clear answer if they are going to keep changing their name or not With this type of ending one will probably keep tabs on the issue at hand and see if it ever has a closure Week 9 Capstone DQ Post your response to the following Which part of the writing process was easiest for you Which part was the most difficult What did you learn from your writing experience during this class In what ways have you learned to write more critically How will this knowledge assist you with your education or in your workplace Since the whole writing process is something I was never good at it is hard to say which part I actually found to be easier than the other However since I have to choose one I would have to say it was the introduction seemed to be the easiest After finding out what I wanted to write about and I learned what an introduction should include it was easy to compile enough information to write the introduction The most difficult part of this essay is making sure the flow of the essay conforms to the introduction containing the proper information and avoiding information that has nothing to do with my main topic It is so easy to get side tracked with the amount of information out there not adding things that sound good but have no real use in the essay is essential in keeping the reader following the main point Everything that was taught in this class is something new for me I was never a good writer and for that reason never tried to write anything complicated With the help from the brainstorming technique the topic outline and explanations on how to create an effective thesis statement I feel I have the learned enough to sit down and write something somewhat intelligent In one way I have learned to write more critically is the fact that my writing is not as bias or vague Before when writing things for work they were somewhat biased and ambiguous and usually had employees asking more questions Now when I post a memo for the employees they seem to understand what is expected of them without questioning the memo as much I think this class has helped out immensely in my current job and hopefully in future jobs As far as my education is involved it will be invaluable and help me complete the remainder of my classes easier
