Nguyen 1 Vivian Nguyen September 26 2014 Dr Luis Salinas Sociology Civil inattention The act of ignoring other people to inappropriate degree although noticing that other people are present Growing up in a big family has lead me to be empathetic towards families with children If a child is making a scene in a public area I normally ignore the noise However I do see people who shamelessly stare Discrimination Any behavior practice or policy that harms excludes or disadvantages individuals on the basis of their group membership A while back a friend and I decided to eat dinner at a restaurant As we waited for our food I noticed how the waiters were more attentive to the tables with older customers than they were to us They received their food before we did and we had to wait a while if we needed anything else My impression was that they did not care about our opinions as much as they did of the older customers Interview Method of collecting data based on asking a person a set of questions and having a conversation with him or her focused on gathering information related to the research I applied to my first job in May 2013 Management called me in so they could meet me and ask some questions The questions they asked helped them to decide whether or not I was qualified for the position Immigration A term that describes the movement of people across borders My parents were born in Vietnam and growing up I was always told stories about their adventures to the US They talked about how dangerous it was because their country was at war and their living conditions were definitely not luxurious Nguyen 2 Crossing borders was a complicated process paperwork and transportation were not easy to come by Role A position within an institution or organization that comes with specific social expectations for how to behave and be treated I am the oldest child in the family of five daughters The responsibilities I had were different from my siblings just because I was older My job as the eldest was to set a good example for my sisters I always had to be conscious of my actions because they all looked up to me Significant other A term coined by George Herbert Mead to mean individuals close enough to us to have a strong capacity to motivate our behavior As a teenager in middle school I never had any confidence in myself I look at others to determine what the right thing to do or wear was I especially cared about my best friend s opinion If she told me that my clothes were ugly I would get rid of it If she told me she liked me outfit I would wear it more often Selffulfilling prophecy A term coined by Robert Merton to men the process by which someone is defined in a particular way and then comes to ful ll the expectations of that definition I worked at a learning center where I worked with small children for about a year Sometimes it was difficult to handle them because they would get rowdy or not want to focus But when I encouraged them to work harder because they were a good boy girl they listened to my instructions They wanted to prove to me that they indeed were good children Stereotype A simplified and often negative generalization about group that is often false or exaggerated Due to my ethnicity many people assumed things about me that were completely false Just because I was Asian I was apparently good at math and had to do exceptionally well in school People thought it was funny to greet me with Ching Chong when in fact that s not even a word in my language Culture Systems of belief and knowledge shared by members of a group or society that shape individual and group behavior and attitudes Nguyen 3 My best friend is Caucasian and I am Asian How she lived her life was completely different than mine Whenever one person would go to the other s house the other person was unfamiliar with how certain things were done within the home We ate different foods talked to our parents differently and just went about our day differently Reference group Individuals who share similar preferences or social positions and have in uence on an individual or members of a group I have a small group of friends that I enjoy spending time with We went to school and grew up together Whenever there was an event we all would enjoy going to we made plans to go together
