SOC 490 Week 1 D0 2 Methodology for Selecting a Sample Population Your Capstone Project will focus on a speci c sample population for future research In this discussion you will need to do two things First explain the attributes of the sample population that you plan to study Then explain the research methodology you will use to study that population Will you use a quantitative approach qualitative approach or a mixture of both Which approach do you nd most valuable and why Response The population I have chosen for substance Abuse and suicide is ages 35 50 The reason I chose this group is because between these ages there is change in environments friends jobs marriage divorce etc that may in uence a person to start drinking or using drugs Many people turn to drugs and alcohol for different reasons For some alcohol and drugs are a part of their life and considered normal Others may try drugs and alcohol for fun but are responsible There are those people who continue to drink and drive Other factors include depression and other mental illness39 In my friends case he was raised around alcohol and it was a normal part of his life Life events became difficult and I believe because he did not have a support network he ended his life l have not heard of the toxicology results but it is known he was drinking I propose to nd out the relationship of alcoholdrug abuse that eventually leads to suicide I want to investigate and understand how social changes occur within this group that may be a factor in suicide I will use both quantitative and qualitative research I believe both are valuable in the research process Quantitative research will provide facts and data supporting qualitative studies on suicides in relation to alcohol Qualitative methods of interviews thoughts support networks interventions efforts etc are extremely valuable Landrum 2012 Researching using quantitative methodology will help organize my thoughts for qualitative methods Reference Landrum R E 2012 Research and writing in the social sciences San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc
