SOC 490 Week 5 DQ 1 Final Re ection This is the nal discussion and because there is only one this week there will be many tasks However they should be quite enjoyable for most of you In the following discussion you will re ect on your overall academic experience Remember that your answers will in no way in uence your grade Instead they will be used as engines for re ection on what professors and course designers can do to strengthen this program and the components of this program Please answer the following questions What was the most useful or enjoyable class that was part of your major course curriculum the courses in your major that are not general education courses Why was it the most useful or enjoyable What was your least useful or enjoyable class that was part of your major course curriculum the courses in your major that are not general education courses Why was it the least useful or enjoyable What was the most important thing concept theory idea behavior that you learned from your academic studies in the Social Science program Why What was the least important thing concept theory idea behavior that you learned from your academic studies in the Social Science program Why How do you plan on utilizing what you have learned in your personal or professional life Please be extremely speci c f there was one piece of advice that you could give to someone who is thinking about giving up before reaching his or her degree what would that be If the advice is general try to provide concrete examples of how to act out that general advice Response The more challenging courses are the more I enjoy them When I took SOC315 Cross Culture Perspectives understanding culture politics and policies I developed a new found respect for Hillary Clinton and her position as Secretary of State Traveling abroad as well as visiting different countries and cultures requires knowledge of diverse perspectives in the political and social arenas PSY325 was my least favorite class I did well in the class but some of the assignments were too mathematical for me My favorite theory is the Ecological System Theory While writing a paper on juvenile delinquency this theory was the best to address issues of adolescent substance abuse behavior and crime This theory suggests individuals are engaged in constant transactions with other human beings and with other systems in the environment and that these various persons and systems reciprocally in uence each otherquot Hepworth Rooney Larson 1997 p 16 This theory addresses the macro level of an adolescent The theory explains people are interconnected with families neighborhoods groups peers and sociopolitical networks Problem behaviors within these setting can be changed swiftly only if there is a collaborative effort of all systems to link together and institute plans before the adolescent falls through the cracks and spends his or her life in the criminal justice system I did not nd any sociological theories unlikeable Each theory provided learning and knowledge to apply to different situations involving speci c groups I will apply what I have learned in both my personal and professional life l have plans to become a counselor in transitional living for prisoners just coming out ofjail Understanding groups as well as individuals in respect to where they have been and providing support for these people is my goal The knowledge I have gained as well as hands on experience will help link groups adolescents adults and the justice system in supporting those looking to stay out of prison Personally I have a different perspective on many issues I understand the political world much better than before as well as other cultures Philadelphia is diverse and having knowledge of the different backgrounds as well as cultural perspectives helps me feel more comfortable when observing or hearing of certain group actions beliefs and perspectives My advice to those students thinking of giving up on their degree is take a break I suggest taking some time off if needed to regroup reevaluate and revive l have done this myself Reference Hepworth D Rooney R and Larson j 1997 Direct social work practice theory and skills 3rd ed BrooksCole Paci c Grove CA as cited in Terry Y VanderWaal C McBride D and Van Buren H 2000 Provision of drug treatment services in the juvenile justice system A system reform The Journal of Behavioral Health Services amp Research 272 194214 May 2000 Retrieved from ProQuest library
