Running Head: IROQUOIS KINSHIP IROQUOIS KINSHIP SYSTEM and ITS IMPACT ON CULTURE Tarasha HicksonSmith ANT. 101 Professor Rachel Grabner July 11, 2011 Iroquois Kinship 2 IROQUOIS KINSHIP SYSTEM AND ITS IMPACT ON CULTURE The Iroquois tribe is a diverse group of Native American Indians joined through marriage and adoption to create several generations of a dominating nation. They are descendants of the Algonquin tribe which were also considered their enemy at one time. The common name Iroquois also known as Iroqu (Iriankhoiw) meaning “rattlesnake” was given to them by the Algonquin tribe, the suffix ois meaning “Tribe of” was later added by the French men that discovered them. This name was considered an insult, as opposed to their original tribal name given of themselves Haudenosaunee, meaning “People of the longhouse”, because that is where they lived as a tribal family (Nowak & Laird, 2010) (Sultzman, n.d.). Great introduction – really gets the reader’s attention. Make sure to include a thesis statement here. The Iroquois tribe was one of the largest and most respected tribes of the land. This massive tribe was divided into smaller groups called clans, which later became recognized as the Six Nations recently having an accounted population of 70,000 (Sultzman, n.d.). The individual tribes within the Iroquois tribe were: Mohawk; Cayuga; Oneida; Tuscarora; Huron; and Seneca. Each individual tribe was divided into 3 or 8 clans depending on size; turtle, bear, wolf, crane, snipe, hawk, beaver, and deer. Each clan was managed by a female elder of the tribe called a clan mother. Due to their horticultural way of life the women have the ultimate say so over the tribe and how it is governed from relationship to leadership and even economical growth, being they were the owners and the elders of the land and the people. Therefore, kinship is traced though a matrilineal social structure because of the woman’s status in their culture (Nowak & Laird, 2010). Great description Iroquois Kinship 3 When families are formed, traditionally the marriage is to be between cross cousins or extended family with the blessing of the female elder, being that he is an acceptable mate for the wife and an enhancement to her mother’s clan; they like to keep the wealth and strength in their tribe (Nowak & Laird, 2010). After marriage the man moves from his mother’s longhouse to his wife and her mother’s longhouse where he becomes a member of her clan, as well as the children that are born into the marriage are made members of her clan. They then live, work, and play as one tribe in separate longhouses on a portion of land called a reservation (Nowak & Laird, 2010). As each clan is proportionally balanced according to their needs the women of the tribe nominate chiefs of the tribe to act as leaders during time of peace or war. The sachems are peace chiefs that only exercise their power during times of peace; the war chiefs are to exercise their power during war (McConvell, 2010). These positions are held for life until death, or denouncing if found acting out of character to their appointed positions. Nice connections throughout between kinship and marriage/residency. This tribe was highly valued for their unity, sense of purpose and superior political organization.They considered themselves to be a superior people, hence the name “Ongwi Honwi” (McConvell, 2010).(this sentence is a big awkward, consider revising) The Iroquois took pride in their heritage and honored the laws given to them by their ancestors. Such laws were: “The Great Law of Peace”, known as the Kanerekowa; and the 114 wampus (McConvell, 2010). (runon sentence, consider revising) Although they had numerous internal as well as external wars that caused a great decrease in population, their sacrifice to unite with their enemies and adopt them into their tribe was a noble act to support and sustain their tribe at all cost for the good of the whole (McConvell, 2010). With constant reminders from the clan Iroquois Kinship 4 mothers, and elders of the tribe to maintain the pride of the tribe and set aside their differences they became the most influential tribe of their nation and beyond, influencing the English men to adopt most of their governing policies and morals (Sultzman, n.d.). This is a really interesting discussion here, but be careful that your sentences don’t go on too long. Some of these are run on sentences that could easily be broken down to be clearer to the reader. Iroquois Kinship 5 Kinship can have a great impact on who you are and who you become. For me I have an image to uphold, and it is one of prestige and pride. Having great respect for my elders that have taught three generations of kin is what it means to be proud. I try to adopt those impressive characteristics that had a positive impact on my life, so that I can be a proper representative of my ancestors. The life lessons and wisdom that have been passed down from generation to generation have given me direction on the decisions I make in my life going forward. Good comparisons!
