Running Header THE SAN Evaluating the San Stanley Coleman ANT 101 Kathryn Grant May 27 2013 Running Header THE SAN 2 As stated by Nowak B amp Laird P 2010 the San or Bushmen are a band society that is made from many nuclear families which would be a household of a mother a father and their children The San are of bilateral decent meaning that you can trace ancestry from both mother and father This is useful because this gives the San the opportunity to move from one band to another when resources begin to fall short With the San being so close in kinship there is little to no need to worry about where resources will come from The San are actually one of the oldest foraging societies to date Located in Africa the San are a people who move place to place where food and water is not scarce The San only use what they need from the earth moving from one spot to another to make sure that resources are able to replenish themselves The San makes sure that no home goes without Each home within the band share their rewards from either hunting or gathering The San have a gender based division of labor The women gather nuts and berries as well as care for the children the men are the hunters and also make tools used for both foraging and hunting Women also have a role in making big decisions within the community The kinship system is very important in this community It affects how one is married within the system it dictates where a band will live when times get hard as well as who shares food and resources with who Without a person of kin in another band there could come a time where resources are scarce and the band in need has nowhere to turn to When comparing the San to my own society I can see similarities as to their kinship system We like them can trace our ancestry from either our mother or our father Another similarity I see is that they share their goods with other homes within their band I can relate to Running Header THE SAN this because within my own family even hundreds of miles apart we try to make sure that none of our family is in a bad way or in need of anything The kinship system of the San ensures that each member of the band has a role to play They all work very hard to make sure that no one within their band society goes without or has to worry about where resources will come from Running Header THE SAN Reference Page Nowak B amp Laird P 2010 Cultural anthropology San Diego Bridgepoth Education Inc Retrieved from httpscontentashfordedu
