Virtual organizations have been evolving for decades Native Americans used smoke signals to get the word to geographically remote people as well as in the middle ages along with alarm bells Another example of primitive use of communication is the telegraph that allowed people to communicate one continent to the next On the other hand radio and the telephone allowed for longrange voice communication Virtual organizations really did not come into trend until the personal computer the intemet and video conferencing were readily available Today people communicate not only on a national level but also on multinational levels as companies find ways to stay connected virtually This technology allows individuals to communicate and work sidebyside on projects without meeting facetoface or same work center The pros associated with the design of the virtual organization are exibility adaptability lower overhead costs less commute time reduced carbon footprint and ability to spend more time with children This allows organization to be more exible especially if the job requires traveling Additionally organizations are capable of hiring topnotch individuals with required expertise The ability to add and drop components as required allows for the organization to ex as necessary to meet demands while reducing unnecessary components keeping costs low The negative attributes would be lack of complete control difficulty with reading emotions trusting people to do the correct things time zone management and no physical interaction with others Additional shortcomings are short term relationships as organizations come and go as needed Then there is the need for contractual agreements to ensure each segment of the organization holds up their end of the business The need to build trust with employees and virtually unknown vendors for what could be very short periods One of the most difficult tasks to overcome might be the constant need to adapt to change I believe that the communication is vital in this type of environment The technological devicesconcepts that have the greatest impact on virtual organizations would be the personal computer the intemet and video conferencing It all starts with personal computer and tablets in order to excess the intemet and ability to video conference Additionally these devices and tools allow individuals to do the work of multiple people from just a few years ago The intemet allows for the shrinking of the world instant communication with any geographic area and inexpensive ways to make the communication happen Video conferencing or the smart phone allow for video communication with people all over the world This capability enables multiple people to conduct facetoface meetings without being in the same room To make it work well it requires very fast broadband intemet speeds but it is able to work with quality intemet connections References Baack D 2012 Organizational Behavior San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc
