Contrast the dynamics between dominant cultures and subcultures either in a work setting or in society Explain why it is important to understand the impact of culture Give an example where you demonstrated your awareness and or openness to understanding a cultural difference Explain how these differences underscore the need for understanding diversity From the information given develop guidelines for embracing diversity Respond to at least two of your peers for this posting and offer some additional ideas of your own A dominant culture either in a work setting or in society is the group of people who establish the most popular or most powerful view When this group becomes big enough most often a subculture will emerge differentiating itself from the main group with slightly different views or ideals from the main group Baack 2012 Either group is still considered dominating as their ideals or beliefs are in the majority and become a norm for most While both of these groups are made up of one main group adhering to the core values and beliefs that established their domination the separation that occurs with the subgroup is due mainly to a stronger or different adherence to those beliefs For example in an organization that relies on donated human tissue to process and prepare for transplantation the entire group of employees have a strong ethical belief that the donated tissues are a huge gift and should be respected immensely Within that group the department that speaks to the family members to gain consent for the donated tissue have a much stronger conviction about the ethical construct of the business they represent This is a key example of how two distinct groups can emerge from a main group each having distinct ideas of the beliefs they represent In this scenario I was stuck between groups as I performed multiple tasks with multiple groups It was the fact that l was able to understand both groups equally that made it possible to liaise with each group thereby calming a situation that could have escalated from a misunderstanding This situation as touched on above could potentially lead to strife within the group potentially breaking down the powerful and normsetting dominant culture that exists On the other hand were the culture to become too powerful it would be extremely difficult for those who don t believe in the culture to establish their own beliefs This is why understanding diversity is extremely important aiding to an overall understanding of how parties that share different beliefs need to work together to achieve the end goal To achieve this departments should be crosstrained to understand the duties and stresses of the other departments adding to the camaraderie and group feeling that needs to exist in a company Once each person can understand what the other people go through to make theirjob succeed the awareness that develops helps them realize how a workplace must be diverse to be effective Reference Baack D 2012 Organizational behavior San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc Retrieved from https content ashfordedubooksAUB US6 1 0 122
