Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 1 Team building Alexander Rodgers BUS610: Organizational Behavior (MAB1134A) 12 September 2011 Gary Shelton Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 2 Team building Introduction Team building is one of the most important areas organizations concentrate on; it has become a buzzword in recent years, and has many benefits in term of high quality output delivery. In terms of corporate development, teambuilding exercises are essential, not for the instantaneous understanding of the activities, carried out by the team as well as for the group proficiencies, bonding and communication over a period of time. Such activities range from solving a puzzle together to a challenge to eat 500 Chocolates etc. Only aim of Team Building activities is to deliver a highimpact learning experience amongst all team members and deliver quality (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). When a conflict arises, an opportunity for growth dies. There are plenty of ways by which conflict can arise; two of the main reasons are miscommunication and incompatibility. Thus, the teambuilding approach makes compatibility among the employees at the workplace to overcome miscommunication and arising conflicts. In this paper, we will discuss team building exercise for conflict resolution. Moreover, we will also discuss its benefits at the workplace with respect to employee performance. Discussion The major objectives of teambuilding are to resolve conflict, and advance motivation and productivity. Letting the employees go out for activities helps groups crash personal and political barriers, and eliminate distractions. The benefits of teambuilding programs are so significant that many corporations have incorporated teambuilding strategies into their standard training curriculum. Such training is mandatory for all new joiners and also at the time of change of levels and designations (Phillips & Elledge, 2008). Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 3 Once an organization decides to grant such learning’s in the form of Team Building program, the question becomes: where to go and what to do? A group of few employees are working dedicatedly on such event planning and continuously keep searching for nice places in America and different varieties of games. In the hustle and bustle of the corporate world, where turnover and attrition levels are skyrocketing, we have seen many corporate depending on renowned event management companies in their city to plan and execute team building activities as per the packages offered. Teambuilding programs provide upbeat and powerful team experiences allowing companies to compete effectively by enabling staff at all corporate levels to work as a true team players. Many projects now days keep designing some Fun activities on daily or weekly basis in the form of formal knowledge testing email games etc. Few interproject activities like group lunch etc also promote team spirit (Greer & Plunkett, 2000). Conflict Resolution Activities Manager needs to be wellversed in conflict resolution activities. Once a conflict has taken place, it needs to be managed properly. This happens through conflict resolution activities such as the use of "I" messages that make use of the “I” word to make feelings known and understood. Other conflict resolution activities for training include written expression and physical exercises such as golf and tennis. Team building forces confrontation and resolution; hence a group that has been through a team building exercise does not generally have cause for conflict with other members. Team building activities are mostly physical in nature, but are designed to reward teamwork and bring out all of the complex issues that spoil the harmony. Examples of team building activities include Helium Stick, Toxic Waste, Survival Scenarios and Paintball. Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 4 Theoretical knowledge, when implemented, becomes a realistic experience. That’s why companies conduct team building activities where planned tasks are carried out for effective team building. It’s just a fun. After various studies and researches, it was analyzed that there was only one factor, which was missing in the organization, and the team because of which the goals were not met and that was strong team building efforts. Even the brightest resource can’t show up his/her colors if team efforts and teams support to accept the change is missing. Playing games during team outings, team cooking, team racing etc. are few popular activities that help in better communication and networking, which is surely taken back to workstation of employees and help in conflict resolution (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). Many strategies of conflict management utilized in team building involve a set of ordinary handling operations. Some might make use of a direct strategy primarily, whereas others might resort to methods like bargaining, enforcement, and perhaps retreat or deemphasis. Lots of different techniques of conflict management may additionally utilize 2 or more of those methods simultaneously. The precise kind of conflict management used in team building might differ substantially dependent upon the state of affairs, the individuals involved, and the organization being considered (Phillips & Elledge, 2008). Conclusion Teams are about US, not me and YOU. Every employee needs to shed his/her ego before stepping in team building activities. Teambuilding exercises are intended to create a more cohesive and productive environment in which team members can realize the full psychological benefit. Such employees with refreshed and enthusiasm return and achieve desired goals. This leads to growth of the organization. Team building exercise helps an organization to reduce the Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 5 disputes among the employees. Therefore, the team building exercise is a crucial management technique for conflict management at the workplace. Running Head: TEAM BUILDING 6 References Greer, C., & Plunkett, R. (2000).
