Methods I Introduction Riordan Manufacturing is an industry leading plastic manufacture with facilities located in both North America and China Riordan has struggled to meet their effectiveness standards for multiple categories and they are looking to implement one of three quality improvement methods to improve process efficiency If Riordan is to maintain an industry leader changes must occur in processes across the board in relation to accuracy availability quality timeliness and cost However the first effectiveness measure to be looked at should be the receiving of raw materials from suppliers since every other process thereafter deals with inventory In addition the formulation of a solution involves certain steps be taken Firstly a processdriven research question should be formulated defining the initial problem Secondly a methodology such as Six Sigma ISO or Baldridge must be chosen to improve the process Thirdly a research design should be created to define any and all variables involved in the solution and fourthly a sample design should be identified for the collection of data Process amp Methodology In any process improvement method the first step is to define the problem by asking a process driven research question Riordan s processdriven question is how does the receipt of material shipment timeliness affect Riordan s efficiency cores From this question data can be compiled to determine the negative ripple effect in Riordan s receiving process as well as every other process following the receipt of raw material and the adverse affect it has on meeting effectiveness standards Riordan Manufacturing has chosen to use the Six Sigma methodology in creating a solution for improvement in the raw materials receiving process Six Sigma was chosen because it analyzes and improves upon processes already in place For this Riordan will follow the simple steps below in defining the problem as well as creating the solution D define the problem M measure the process and gather data associated with the problem A analyze the data to identify a causeandeffect relationship between key variables I improve the process so the problem is eliminated measured results meet requirements C control the process so the problem does not return Following the above logic corrective action can be taken to improve Riordan s raw material receiving process allowing Riordan to meet and possibly exceed their effectiveness standards Design and Procedure To construct an appropriate research design for the study the following design characteristics need to days University of Phoenix 2008 p 3 The dependent variable is the travel time to arrive at Riordan s receiving dock The independent variables are how many hours are the drivers spending driving to arrive at Riordan s manufacturing complex from the point of the origin of the trip Another independent variable is whether or not the trucks breakdown on the trip The issue of what to measure for research needs to be defined Rather than measure travel time of supplies to Riordan from the point of origination a more effective metric for measurement would be the variability of the scheduled arrival time using the mean and standard deviation of arrivals As a manufacturer that uses lean manufacturing techniques the issue is not how long the supplies have spent on the road the issue is did the materials make it to Riordan s manufacturing complex as scheduled and as needed With this definition of the issue the dependent variable definition is did the truck containing the raw materials make it to Riordan within four hours of schedule Other dependent variables take into account road repairs and closures and the reliability of the trucks delivering the raw materials to Riordan Manufacturing The independent variables are when did the truck leave the point of origination and how long did the driver spend driving to Riordan Another independent variable is did the truck driver
