GENDER IDENTITY Gender Identity PSY 340 GENDER IDENTITY 2 Gender Identity Every person possesses a gender identity within their self s which nearly everyone match one s anatomic look A person s gender indentify is either male or female or possibly something in between This is a significant individual trait that adds to ones selfworth It is the mode in which one perceives him or hers anatomic pretrial The one is acknowledged by society feels and the background can make the variation concerning being unhappy or happy Regrettably gender identity is frequently confused due to the fact that it is the majority that is assumed to concur with one s outward show Quite frequently it does but there are times that it can differ Simply because one is expected to be a certain way due to their shared outlook or even due to what society says does not mean that it will always be this way Things are not always the way they come into view and it takes vast amount of understanding and knowledge to recognize human beings for what they are even if it disagrees with what ones upbringing or option A vigorous infant boy was born to extremely cheerful parents Though when he was about eight months old an accident happened and the boy s genitals were dreadfully destroyed His prime male outward show at the age he was at was his penis and now it was no longer there Entirely distressed by the catastrophe his parents knew of a psychologist that had the ability to help allocate sex to a child with whose genitals were not there for a reason or damaged by some other reason If it is not created then the child will be assigned a grammatical gender in the Western world all children must be either a boy or a girl which may or may not match that child39s social gender as it evolves over the course of childhood Cubertson 2009 p17 Regularly when a parent or even a close relative selects the sex for their child because of situations it works quite well but these same prenatal hormones can also in uence the child in a GENDER IDENTITY 3 negative manner For this boy it did not work and this he start in on life an unhappy boy living as a girl Many troubles arisen until she spoke with a different psychologist Her parents as a final point spoken to her about what had happened to her and she then began the alteration back into a male It appeared as if being a male once again gave him happiness to the point that he married and was a stepfather Though the end of this tale is not joyful due to the fact that David Reimer the boy hand over his life to suicide at the young age of 38 New York Times 2004 A multitude of factors are brought into play when determining one s concluding gender identity It is vital to recognize that not everything that looks a particular way will also present as such One s anatomy might indicate being a male or female Just because of this it is not meant that this is in fact how an individual views their self s Chromosomes are one of the chief roles in the development of one s sexual organs Sexual chromosomes named XX and XY help establish sexual differentiation For example XX chromosomes will direct the body to develop a female while XY chromosomes will lead to the development of a male The nonsexual chromosomes and sexual X chromosome can do more by possessing the capability of the development of either genital The introduction to hormones after and before an individual is birthed is so very important Hormones are accountable for an individual s biological make up Being noteworthy is the fact that the Y chromosome guides the glands to excrete male sex hormones Hormones in attendance throughout pregnancy will for the most part have an affect the nervous system It is significant to recognize that each embryo is bisexual and has the capability to turn into a female or male Keep in mind that this is pending the conclusion of the first trimester and the capacity of hormones which will establish the class of system the Wolffian system or Mullerian system to develop Carlson 2007 GENDER IDENTITY 4 It is clear that hormones in uence gender identity and help one to not only view him or her as male or female but also feel as such Masculine and androgynous children and adults have higher selfesteem whereas feminine individuals often think poorly of themselves perhaps because many of their traits are not highly valued by society Berk 2004 p264 The way an individual differs in beliefs the environment and just raised from birth are a few reasons that help prove an individual is not birthed knowing every aspect of him or herself Infants are not given the information of what their gender identity and anatomy is The child gain knowledge of it at a particular time in his or her life It is believed that most children first become aware of their anatomic sex by about the age of 18 months By 36 months most children have acquired a firm sense of gender identity Rathus S A Nevid J S amp Fichner Rathus L 2008 p 167 Knowing this it can be stated that an individual s cognitive progress and social wisdom also has an affect directly with their gender identity Infants at first are in uenced by their care takers and then by other peers media and authority figures There is also a theory that called the gender schema theory This theory recognizes the sturdy in uence an individual s environment and their cognitive development work with one another This occurs by putting in motion either feminine or masculine categories that a person can identify with further We all know females play with certain items and males follow the same path Both genders can be disapproved of by not sticking to certain rules of sociality peers or even the care takers Parents give gender specified activities and toys to categorize an individual by gender and age This shows how many different aspects help a person to choose their gender identity Berk 2004 We know that though an individual s outward image in general follows along with a person s preference but what about when this is not the case This GENDER IDENTITY 5 could be a reason why for many individual s to truthfully let people know how they feel when it is concerning gender identity Could this also be why a person never declare themselves and bring it to severely hurting one s self or taking it to the extent of ending their life This can be made clearer by investigating the manners of intersexual human beings Intersexual humans differ from their natural sexual image yet the individual is raised by how they appear However multitudes express fighting within their selves to decide whether they are female or male This shows the proof of the linking of environment and the biological factors that contribute to an individual s gender identity Rathus S A Nevid J S amp FichnerRathus L 2008 Biological psychology is a vital role and considers opposing factors when explaining how sexual differentiation is decided on and what gender identity is used It accepts that an individual s brain aids in deciding their behavioral qualities and that this conduct bears a resemblance to ether male or female uniqueness and thus will categorize them as such Biological psychology in addition knows that it is not so uncomplicated giving an explanation to an individual and that there are numerous additional and significant features in a person s life which can be the cause of particular actions to happen This is prove that not just does the brain but also environment cultural upbringing hormones heredity and the individual s decision s will aid in deciding either a nontraditional or traditional role with which an individual can better identify themselves As we know people differ from one to another so too they will be different in each other s individual s in uences A person s outward appearance does not point out how a person may feel Definite and imperative factors add to an individual s gender identity and sexual differentiation It matters greatly to try to locate an accurate answer because this may offer more GENDER IDENTITY 6 knowledge involving human nature Just possibly the day will come that a much clearer declaration can be offered but in the mean time it should at all times be kept in mind that every person tries to be their most paramount self They want to be acknowledged for who there are and not be judged because of it A way of doing this could be by making it illegal to discriminate in employment public accommodation credit housing and education based on a person39s sexual orientation or gender identity
