is not successful unless the communication within leadership is successfully conveyed to the employees within the company Understanding communications and developing good communication skills are critical to effective leadership and success across organizations There are many organizations and individual leaders who fail miserably because they were not able to successfully communicate with those they are leading The leadership in a company from the leaders with direct level reports and those who are the executive leaders are what can break a company if they are not able to lead the company in the right direction A leader must be able to communicate effectively When CEOs and other senior executives in all industries and countries are asked to list the most important skills a manager must possess the answer consistently includes good communication skills Effective communication within leadership is essential to ensure that the organization becomes successful and that the individuals within the organization become successful as well In fact all true leaders will always stand apart from their peers because they possess the ability to effectively communicate In the world of business failing to be crystal clear in your communication can have a major impact on achieving your business goals It can make the difference between achieving the thriving and successful enterprise that you desire and poor business performance Several features that impact communication are articulation uency voice and language listening skills and gestures When these features blend together in a perfect manner that person is able to have successful and productive communication Effective communication is important in every aspect of business It is important in important tasks such as negotiating prices and Leadership 3 contracts with vendors It is important in screening and interviewing potential candidates for employment It is critical to ensuring the goals expectations and operating guidelines of your business are clearly understood by every employee in the organization Leadership communication uses the full range of communication skills and resources to overcome interferences and to create and deliver messages that guide direct motivate or inspire others to action Articulation According to Merriam Webster s Dictionary articulation is defined as expressing oneself readily clearly or effectively A leader who has clear articulation can be perceived as more intelligent than someone who does not This is due to the fact that the leader is able to express their thoughts and opinions in a manner that everyone is capable of understanding Articulation is vital to credibility because pronunciation is probably the most dynamic feature of a voice A speaker with poor pronunciation is perceived to be lower in competence trustworthiness and dynamisn than a speaker with good pronunciation Fatt Articulation is an invaluable skill and a trait that every leader should possess It ows through exceptional selfmotivation and is highly inspirational Some say that articulation is born rather than made This extraordinary talent can be nurtured and perfected with a little trial and error Poor articulation can occur due to certain reasons as mumbling speaking too softly or with an accent or the voice trailing off at the tail end of sentences due to running short of air in the lungs Articulation of your vision and goals is a huge part of being an effective leader If as a leader you can39t effectively articulate why it is your team is doing what they are doing then you can39t get good quotbuyinquot from your team Articulation really goes beyond communicating Many leaders can communicate their vision they can talk about their vision they can inform the team of their vision But if they can39t articulate the details Leadership 4 of their vision then they can39t effectively get everyone going in the same direction Successful articulation is the stepping stone to successful communication Without this element a leader is not going to be able to successfully accomplish any of the other features of successful communication Fluency Fluency is your speech being effortless and having an understandable ow between the phrases and words that are being chosen along with an acquired rate Speaking at the apporopriate rate is vital to having your message be understood to those that are listening Speaking too quickly can cause your message to appear incomprehensible and speaking too slowly can cause the audience to become bored and easily tune out the message you are trying to give By speaking with an even pace and enunciating clearly allows your message to be clear to everyone and portrays yourself as an adequate leader The art of uency becomes a crucial leadership approach for anyone wishing to become an effective leader It is the only way forward if a leader is truly committed to creating an organization where everyone can ourish to their fullest potential Voice and Language A dynamic leader must also possess a powerful voice that commands control Through a strong confident voice the listener is able to recognize the type of leader they are working with According to Fatt 1999 A person with a weak voice is usually perceived as lacking confidence which lowers credibility A strong voice on the other hand shows great confidence p37 Another important element within the voice of the leader is also their pitch The tone of language of the speaker should vary in pitch this will assist in retaining the attention of the Leadership 5 audience whether it be only one person or a group of people By properly emphasizing the right words and using the correct tone adds interest to the message that is being delivered With a speech that is monotonic and boring the audience loses attention quickly and the speaker begins to lose their credibility It is critical that a leader is able to find their voice and effectively portray their message to others around them Being an effective leader means being able to effectively communicate to others through accurate speech and language Listening Skills Listening skills are extremely important for all of leadership within an organization An effective leader must be viewed as approachable and willing to listen and willing to accept questions from everyone In order to ensure an audience understands the message that is being conveyed a leader should ask questions to their audience This helps gain information introduce new ideas to the message provides better clarification and shows an audience that the speaker does care about their opinions By listening effectively you will get more information from the people you manage you will increase others39 trust in you you will reduce con ict you will better understand how to motivate others and you will inspire a higher level of commitment in the people you manage In a large way effective leadership is effective listening Effective listening is a way of showing concern for subordinates and that fosters cohesive bonds commitment and trust Effective listening tends to reduce the frequency of interpersonal con ict and increases the likelihood that when con icts emerge they will be resolved with a quotwinwinquot solution In addition if you listen to the people you manage you will learn what can really bother them When you know what bothers them you will be more effective at motivating them You can encourage them when they need encouraging and you will know what kinds of Leadership 6 things they value as rewards for a job well done Some of the basic concepts to being an effective listener include looking at the person who is speaking to you and maintaining eye contact eliminate all distractions do not interrupt display a friendly open attitude and body language and ask question to clarify what you heard and to let the other person know you are interested in what they are saying Gestures The use of nonverbal behaviors and gestures during messages being delivered can enhance a speech as well as decline it Eye contact is one of the most note worthy behaviors that can affect the credibility of the leader providing a message If a leader fails to maintain eye contact when speaking they may appear dishonest or vague Studies on eye contact and its effect on communication and credibility find that maintaining gaze while communicating is beneficial to creditability and conversely averting eye contact is detrimental credibility Fatt Other areas that have lowered credibility for leaders in regards to eye contact also include looking down at their notes for long periods of time shifting your eyes around the room excessively and blinking too much Using gestures within communication is also a powerful way to enhance a message A speaker who is just standing and talking without any movement becomes dull over a period of time However on the other side if there are too many gestures or movements it can become distracting and lose the audiences interest in the message Gestures should be able to ow with the message in order for them to provide an advantage to the leader The key to utlizing gestures is in the appearance of spontaneity and naturalness during effective communication so that the gestures do not come off as being tense or uneasy Conclusion Leadership 7 An effective leader must learn how to communicate and there are a number of ways to develop communication skills A mentor Who possess above average skills would be a good resource to assist in the attainment of the much needed communication skills Leaders can identify a seniorlevel executive Within their organization that is capable of serving as theit mentor and ask for their advice on communication and act on that advice Bookstores and libraries also offer many ideas for leaders to use to try and enhance their communication skills Another alternative is to use management courses or professional public speaking organizations that offer training and skill building on communication The goal of many of these organizations is to improve business leaders abilities to communicate and to become a dynamic communicator Within any setting Within any organization effective quality communication skills for leaders are the steps to success When conveying ideas it is important that leaders are able to incorporate effective communication in order to enhance a successful organizational environment
