Information networks 1 Running Head: Information networks TUI UNIVERSITY Excedric T. Mattox Module 2 CA ITM 501 Management of Information Systems and Business Strategies DR. James Walter Marion Information networks 2 January 30, 2011 Introduction This case assignment will answer some questions in regards to purchasing a business intelligence system. It will also address how such a system will help out businesses, the sort of information and analysis capabilities it will provide, the hardware and software required to run this application, some major vendors who carry this system, and finally an evaluation of this system. Let me start by saying that business intelligence is a top priority for 1 top executives. “Business Intelligence continues to be of the top investment priority for CIOs. The most critical success factor for a BI program is to have a BI strategy in place. However, only few companies today have a comprehensive enterprise BI strategy. Why? Major barriers to building a successful BI strategy include lack of alignment between IT and the business 1 http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/webcontent/uuid/d0d7ba8fbfc12c109bb7 d7a07a9cc035&prtmode=print Information networks 3 and the tendency to jump to technology decisions or architecture diagrams without considering what business problems the organization is trying to solve.” It seems if a business wants to use these programs they would need to use a wide range of software programs, such as Excel, Access and different database applications for various departments throughout their organization. Using multiple software programs makes it difficult to retrieve information in a timely manner and to perform analysis of the data. The term Business Intelligence (BI) represents the tools and systems that play a key role in the strategic planning process of the corporation. These systems allow a company to gather, store, access and analyze corporate data to aid in decisionmaking (webopedia.com, 2009). Throughout all of the reading what I learned was that as a business we need to get away from the conventional way of thinking and start to think outside the box. What I mean is that when we were used to having one 2 person trying to come up with all the ideas. “Roger Morgan: "Look, we need to explore bold ideas, and I don't think we should be married to the old school concept that ideas only come from the folks accountable for Marketing. According to Woodside Research, by 2013, 49% of company 2 http://blog.minethatdata.com/2010/09/gliebersdressesstupidmarketersand.html Information networks 4 employees will be accountable for a portion of the integrated, crosschannel Marketing calendar, so let's not be closedminded about how we grow our business, ok? I don't want for us to get stuck in oldschool thinking anymore." There are also things that SAP don’t want us to know like there is a lot fraud in this business like the old bait and switch where you make speak 3 with one person and then another person shows up for the interview. “As a project manager for a midsize national consulting firm, I got a request to screen a few potential candidates for an SD (Sales and Distribution) role. The client requirement was very specific, to handle some reasonably straightforward pricing condition setup work. The design was already done, and the requirements were already laid out, there was nothing complicated, no unusual requirements, really it was nothing special. I would have done it myself if I weren’t up to my eyeballs on another project. I contacted the applicant for the interview and the phone screen went great! This candidate knew SD inside, outside, and upside down. Great communication skills, clear, straightforward, relaxed–, no struggling or fumbling for the answers. He pegged everything and it was very clear he 3 http://www.r3now.com/screeningandinterviewmethodstofindtherightsapconsultant Information networks 5 had been working on SAP for many years, just as his resume said. He’d be starting at the client the following Monday as a contractor. A week and a half after that Monday start date, I got a call from the project manager at the client site. The SD consultant was saying that everything they needed to do was going to require a programmer because what they wanted couldn’t be done with standard SAP. The SD consultant I thought I had interviewed got on the phone and his English was HORRIBLE! You could barely understand a word of what he said, worse yet, the little I could make out, this guy was totally clueless. He didn’t even know how to do the simplest pricing related setup (using the SAP “condition technique”) and it was painfully obvious that this was NOT the same person I had screened on the phone. A similar thing happened again to someone else in our company, the “bait and switch” in SAP consulting is alive and well. While lots of people “pad” their resumes, there is a new breed of TOTAL CONS! Watch out for the con artists!” There are so many different ways that you can be coned but you have to take the good with the bad and try to weed out the bad some way. Information networks 6 Generally these systems will illustrate business intelligence in the areas of customer profiling, customer support, market research, market segmentation, product profitability, statistical analysis, and inventory and distribution analysis to name a few (webopedia.com, 2009). Business Intelligent systems integrate with most data sources and computer programs. The ones that were researched were downloadable with Microsoft windows 2000/2003 applications and a hard drive space of about 2GB of RAM. Servers are needed to allow for patches of updates and security checks. o ensure SAP's position as a technology leader, SAP Ventures invests in emerging entrepreneurial companies that are advancing exciting new technologies. SAP Ventures operates independently from the overall SAP strategy to discover and pursue opportunities for financial return. At the same time, the organization brings substantial benefits to its portfolio companies and SAP by facilitating interaction between innovative young companies and the SAP ecosystem (sap.com, 2009). In conclusion, there are several IT companies which offer a variety of business intelligent products and services. This case assignment reviewed Information networks 7 companies, products, services, hardware, and software in regards to business intelligent systems.
