Running Head REFLECTING Re ecting On My Readings Jennifer Robinson ING 103 Professor Tarik Iles February 11 2013 REFLECTING 2 Re ecting On My Readings After reading chapters six and seven of my textbook and re ecting on the newfound information I was able to choose three topics to write about In my paper I will be covering How is searching in a specific database such as Ashford s library different from searching in Bing Google or Yahoo What are some privacy concerns in regards to social media and whether or not email is a dead form of communication for teenagers All three of these topics are important and after reading through my textbook I have a new outlook on each subject With the information that I am learning in this course I will be able to educate my mom and younger siblings on some of the dos and don ts of the web and social media There are big differences between searching for information in the Ashford library and online search engines One major difference is that with the Ashford library you know for a fact that the information you are receiving is from trusted sources and that it has been verified for factualness With online search engines you cannot say the same thing It is important to realize that information is not all created equal The Internet is powerful because it serves as an almost limitless storehouse of data and ideas but it also can be dangerous because it can store misinformation that masquerades as factBowles 2010 What is Information para 4 Some of the misinformation on the internet is created by individuals who are bias in some way Since we all do not share the same views using that person s website as a scholarly source would not we wise There has been a lot of concern in recent years over whether or not social media provides its user with enough privacy Privacy when it comes to social media is big deal With some many REFLECTING 3 people using social media for illgotten gains it is important for us to remember that what we post on social media sites for the world to see can be beneficial as well as put us in danger One Re ecting On My Readings of the main concerns with privacy on social media sites is identity theft A television show appears on MTV called Catfish In the show the creator and host usually uncovers cases where a person who has been mislead by another claiming to be someone that they are not usually through stolen photos Another issue with privacy on social media is that whoever is on your friends list facebook or following you twitter has access to everything that you post to the site Although there are some privacy settings as a general rule it is good to remember that if you post something on Facebook there are no secrets Bowles 2010 Facebook caution para1 the information can always come back to haunt you The question was asked is email dead for teenagers I do not believe that email is dead to the younger generation I have a younger brother who is in his senior year of high school and his English teacher has he to email her some of his major assignments He attends a traditional brick and mortar school and when he first started her class and received his syllabus the first sentence stated that he must have an email address I think that my brothers teacher is starting him on the right track by getting him use to sending and receiving emails since 25 of all office workers productive hours are spent on email Bowles 2010 The Evolution of Email para 1 he will have leg up on other teenagers who s schools do not require them to utilize email when he enters into the work force I think that with the information that I have learned in this course so far will allow me the opportunity to educate others in my family of proper protocol for the web and social media REFLECTING 4 One thing that I can share with my younger brother after reading these chapters is that he should use decression when posting on Facebook He is one of those people who like to vent or rant and rave which could end up hurting him in the end My sister is also a student at Ashford and Re ecting On My Readings with the information that I am learning in this class I will be able to tell her the difference in performing a search in Ashford s library and search on the web through a search engine I feel that by the end of this class I will have enough knowledge on computers to be able to solve must computer related issues on my own thanks to all of the information I am receiVing REFLECTING References Bowles MD 2010 Introduction to Computer Literacy Retrieved from httpscontentashfordedubooksAUINF103 102sectionssec6 1 https content ashfordedubooksAUINF 1 03 102sectionssec73 https content ashfordedubooksAUINF 1 03 102sectionssec7 5
