This is a very involved position that is critical to the clinics at the VA Hospitals. The clerks are the first person that a Patient comes in contact with, and the last person as they leave each Service. Medical Administrative Support or MAS is the largest Department at the hospital, and unfortunately, there performance level is so high; that the turn ever rate is also quite high. For the most part, individuals who start in this position are paid on different grade series (GS) based on knowledge, skills and abilities. Individuals with a medical background receive higher pay than those who have never worked in the medical field, and I believe this to be unfair, as everyone still has to go through the same training and perform the same task. Unless you have worked for the organization before, left and then returned, I feel the practice to be unjust, and would probably do well with a survey. The problem with this is that these surveys can take very long to complete due to the different protocols that have to be completed before the final numbers are in. It is estimated that a survey of this magnitude from “initiating a survey and providing results can be up to 7 months or more.” www.salary.com. Another problem with surveys is that many employees may not appreciate the additional work in completing a time-consuming survey. Because of this lack of enthusiasm, surveys do not usually get 100% feedback from those involved. As a result, companies that utilize a survey can bring about a necessary or unnecessary change. However the only way to know how employees feel is to complete a survey. Maybe if companies offer decent incentives for completing the surveys more employees would take part. Reference Coleman, Bill.
