Ru n n i n g H ea d Organizational Culture Analysis Organizational Culture Analysis Nikki Derry BUS610 Organizational Behavior Instructor Doctor Shawna Wentlandt Wednesday September 14 2014 Organizational Culture Analysis Organizational Culture Analysis As an organization it is vital to have a strong culture presence in everyday dealings There is not an organization out there that does not have some logo or artifact identifying who they are One organization that has made a name for them and is very well known across the world is Starbucks Coffee Company This organization is an excellent example of how many artifacts can affect your organization and how they are an important aspect of an organization as well In order to be a successful organization one has to have a strong set of observable artifacts espoused values and enacted values that will build up the culture of your organization as a whole As stated by Garcia 2014 Starbucks is an international coffeehouse franchise company headquartered in Seattle Washington It is the world s largest coffeehouse and coffee retail chain with 11500 stores in the United States and more than 20000 stores worldwide in 55 countries It is easy to spot a Starbucks anywhere simply be recognizing their logo that is a siren Even though the design of this logo has been modified a few times throughout the years it has always stayed a siren Another artifact that is also very known with Starbucks is the way you order for example only at Starbucks can you get a Tall Grande Venti or Trenti If you try ordering at another coffee shop and mention one of these for the sizes most likely you will get corrected by the employee who is taking the order The siren logo and the name of the drink sizes are both artifacts of the type of culture Starbucks Coffee Company has Organizational Culture Analysis 3 Baack 2012 mentions the following Espoused values are the explicitly stated values and norms that are found in organizations The espoused values of Honest Tea include an emphasis on sustainability and a commitment to helping communities Espoused values are aspirations rather than outcome One of the biggest aspects of working with Starbucks Coffee Company is the way the organization valued their employee s contributions When you get hired on with the company you are automatically a partner with the companies stock Another aspect that the company does for their employees is the idea box Each month employees are encouraged to send in their recipes for new drinks as well as designs for marketing purposes If an individual is picked their drink will become the special drink of the month and they will get a bonus These two aspects allow partners which is us the opportunity to feel involved with the company as one of their own and not just another employee These aspects help the employees know that the organization is always looking for new ideas from the employees themselves and that they value everything that the employee has to offer Enacted Values is The values and norms exhibited as employee and managerial behaviors are enacted values Baack 2012 One of the basic enacted value that we as baristas demonstrated was if they request it we will make it When first hired as a barista into Starbucks we are taught that we have the ability to make anything therefore if the customer requests it then we have to make it As a barista taking the orders and making them this was probably the most fun we would have simply because we got to think outside of the box with the customers and design something that they would want to try Personally I feel like this is the most important enacted value a company can Organizational Culture Analysis 4 empower to an employee because it gives the employees so much room to grow and be creative Organizational culture refers to the formal environment and norms that characterize a specific organization as well as its informal behavioral and the social phenomena that occur among individuals in an organization Mercadal 2014 There are thousands of organizations out there that all have different types of cultures within them Having the chance to work for an organization like Starbucks Coffee Company who has a pronounced culture allowed myself to gain confidence as an employee and feel valued within a large organization By having certain artifacts that set the company aside from others as well as both espoused and enacted values an organization is growing with the culture they have original setup These three aspects impacts the values and the culture of the organization by allowing different thoughts and ideas and as well as allowing their employees to be the core of the values Organizational Culture Analysis Reference Page Baack D 2012 Organizational behavior San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc Garcia J 2014 Starbucks Salem Press Encyclopedia Mercadal T 2014 Organizational culture Salem Press Encyclopedia
