Running Head: Understanding and Coping with Change 1 Understanding and Coping with Change Nikki Derry BUS610: Organizational Behavior Instructor: Doctor Shawna Wentlandt Monday, October 7, 2014 Understanding and Coping with Change 2 Understanding and Coping with Change Change is inevitable and sooner or later one is going to experience change in both personal and a professional environment. Changes which can occur within their personal life, for example, a move, a new family member or death of a loved one. A few examples of changes that can occur in a professional environment are a career change, a promotion or being laid off. Change happens whether one is ready for it or not, but being open minded and understanding that there are solutions to help when the changes occur can ease one’s mind. When looking into what happens with change and how it affects individuals differently; it is important to understand one's background in hopes to find a connection with seeing how change can be a good presence versus a bad presence. My husband served our great nation for over eight years when he received a medically retired discharge from the Army. Before a service member gets separated from the military, they are required to take a class on how to become a civilian and what to expect when the change comes. For some this is a good and easy transition, and for others it is hard and not a smooth transition. My husband falls under the Selfinterest and lack of trust in management when it comes to being resistant to change, however I feel that with the help of Kotter’s theory we can identify a plan of action to help with the changes that he is currently experiencing. During my husbands eight year of active duty, he was under numerous NCO’s also known as Non commissioned officers as well as officers and saw every kind of management there is. He has two jobs while in the military, the first one being Army Understanding and Coping with Change 3 rd Airborne infantry and both served and deployed with the 173 Airborne brigade out of Vincenzai Italy.
