Describe the similarities and differences between the ERG Theory and Maslow39s Hierarchy How have you used either of the two theories in daily life Respond to at least two of your peers for this posting Maslow s hierarchy of needs theory is basically a pyramid style look at how people progress through the types of needs they have until they achieve a state where they perform based on how it affects others as opposed to for themselves This movement through needs starts from the most basic of needs or the physiological needs such as food shelter and clothing B aack 2012 The other needs that on will progress through include safety or the need for protection social needs such as acceptance and love from others and esteem consisting of being looked up to by others B aack 2012 Since the needs progress in order from lowest to highest in regard to priority and thus most people are probably dispersed through the lower levels of needs the pyramid can be visualized as a big base and small apex This theory of Maslow s covers many bases of What motivates people and how they move up through the different levels of needs but failed to cover many facets of motivation as well as describe how people may progress in different ways Alderfer s ERG theory attempted to fill in the holes left by Maslow s hierarchy of needs theory by simplifying it into three basic steps existence relatedness and growth Baack 2012 The same basic needs were being met as with Maslow s although Alderfer grouped them together to visualize them more as physical needs social needs and psychological needs Additionally Alderfer added an the frustrationregression component to the progression of needs stating that when people failed at a task or certain aspect of the progression they would become frustrated and regress back to a lower level of satisfaction B aack 2012 Both of these theories capitalized on how the needs of people are culminated from the most basic through to the most advanced of needs each tier becoming more rewarding and sustaining of motivation What Alderfer was able to present was how the needs of people can be summarized into three basic categories yet the chance of regressing backward was possible through frustrating and lacking circumstances These theories seem to be fairly in line with how I form opinions and make decisions about my actions in my personal life For example when deciding how to spend money I am satisfied if I can pay the food bill Once that is done I will then look to ensure the alarm system is operating and the fence around the property is operational These are both physical needs that are being met as well as being the most basic Next if any money is left over I would like to throw a party to feel the satisfaction of interacting with friends If I have had a particularly good financial month I may purchase a new guitar before the party so my friends will be impressed with my shiny toy which will probably help me play better too These next two needs are social in nature grouping together quite well as Alderfer intended The final action would be to give any extra money I have to a local charity helping my selfactualization need as well as providing psychological growth This final action does not help me in any way except to feel that I have become a more sentient being thereby motivating me to continue to make money so I can provide for others as well as feeling as if I have grown spiritually and psychologically Reference Baack D 2012 Organizational behavior San Diego CA Bridgepoth Education Inc Retrieved from https content ashfordedubooksAUB US6 1 0 122
