Discuss the importance of identifying norms within a team Why is clear communication considered an essential element during team development Provide an example when you were a team member and the lack of communication caused signi cant problems for the team Respond to at least two of your peers for this posting Norms are rules that are conceived by a group that guide them in how they should behave and usually exist as social political and philosophical norms These norms are what dictate how a group believes its members should act and have the potential to be overpowering sometimes being detrimental to the health of the group This is often the fear when a group has too much cohesiveness finding that the members are too complacent to disagree with anything that is considered mainstream In the progression of group behavior the norming phase is pivotal as it allows the group members to establish expectations and behaviors that have in uenced the creation of a group B aack 2012 Often times once norms are established they are difficult to change as they have become ingrained in the group through a rigorous approval pI39OCCSS Within the creation of a group there are certain levels of existence the group goes through from forming to storming norming performing and adjourning To successfully navigate these stages the group needs to establish roles for that each member will play to accomplish the goals of the group To gain role assignment within a group often members will decide which person is best fit for the role they are playing gained thorough a clear understanding of how that person will fit the role In other words the group should know the strengths each person holds to properly place them in a role Once roles are assigned and norms are established the group will rely heavily on proper communication to be successful This is primarily because each person is in charge of his or her own aspect of the group and to gain the proper level of interdependence that the group demands the level of communication should be clear and concise As part of a group each member is typically responsible for a role individual from yet interdependent with other members of the group Once a year our whole company works together on one job which entails multiple teams coming together as one This creates a confusing and frustrating environment as everyone has to adapt new roles without communicating who is doing what Because of this the last time we worked together created a scenario where some items overlapped and others were missed My role as a leader meant that I would usually take an overall look at the layout of the rooms we setup arranged the logistics of each event and communicated with each client Since I assumed my peers were taking that responsibility and they assumed I was we missed communicating to some clients while others were told three different plans of action by our company each plan coming from one of us This is a prime example of how we did not communicate the roles we would each play causing our client to question our professionalism Reference Baack D 2012 Organizational behavior San Diego CA Bridgepoint Education Inc Retrieved from https content ashfordedubooksAUB US6 1 0 122
