Team Building BUS 610 Gary Gentry August 1 2011 Bridget Hall Con ict in the work environment is inevitable When two or more people have to work together and combine ideas the doorway of con ict is ever open The goal is to learn how to use con ict as a tool that can benefit the whole rather than destroy it and the idea of concern A team must have a common goal of success There are strategies which have proven to be beneficial tools when resolving these destructive con icts This is when decisionmaking comes into play We as humans are all different in how we perceive the world con icts will at some level always be part of life How those con icts are resolved however is a choice We can enter into battles defending our position pushing our truth and when all else fails hire our gladiators to battle for us In the end the costs may take their toll on us Or we can approach con ict as a problem looking for a solution We can take an approach much different than the culturally accepted one with results that leave us intact As managers we must go through a process of decision making to gain a better understanding of how managers can make better decisions we must indentify and choose solutions that lead to a desired end result Kinicki amp Kreitner 2009 Team building exercises are useful tools for improving relationships but programs have to be in place for these groups to interact with those they may never really work with in a regular basis These programs should be highly interactive and designed around principles of adult learning experiential learning and multiple learning channels We recognize that different approaches are needed for different groups Most companies today are using outdoor challenges as a way to invigorate some but seem aggravating for others The options in these exercises should include but not limited to the following 0 Facilitative Leadership 0 Emotional Intelligence 0 Constructive Con ict Skills 0 Shared Visioning 0 Collaborative Problem Solving 0 Strategic Planning While simple agreement is the easiest way to protect relationships it is clearly not the best way to solve problems The ability to clearly express differences without triggering defensive mechanisms is a master competency And since answers to complex problems are not solved in oneshot communication exchanges we cannot rely on linear formulas We have to become more adept at reading and adjusting to dynamics in uencing behavior According to Waddell 2009 the most effective and successful leaders in today s challenging work environment follow four basic principles to insure the success of the team and programs for which they are ultimately responsible Here are his four principles that he believes helps an organization produce great leaders 0 Leaders should be led by the group s needs not their own Leaders should never let their own interests cloud their judgment when making decisions that affect everyone In placing their own welfare below that of their employees their authority becomes unquestionable 0 Inaction can sometimes be the most difficult but the wisest action Acting decisively and taking risks to advance the objectives of the organization come instinctively to the most effective leaders In such situations leaders must not only prevent themselves from acting rashly but prevent others from doing so as well 0 If your words do not stick you have not spoken When leaders clearly disseminate their strategic intent the other members of the team will know precisely what to do without requiring a myriad of additional instruction 0 Leading upwards can feel wrong when it is right Effective leaders do not just motivate their own team they also call to action those outside their scope of responsibility including their own supervisors I think it frequently boils down to communication When you are forced to slow down learn about each other s needs and allow yourself to be vulnerable people quickly find common ground Unfortunately old habits are hard to replace When we get busy and frantic the last thing we do is call a time out and regroup It39s counter intuitive yet exactly what we need to do As for other teambuilding days or exercises most people can honestly say we all have started with a shrug a groan and placating smiles and ended with a better understanding of each other The best way to resolve any con icts before they begin is to communicate communicate and communicate Ultimately con ict resolution in the work place can come through increased cooperation amongst coworkers A wellknit team can give increased productivity and less stress Positive attitude can also help tackle many con icts There is an infusion of new ideas and exchange of opinions amongst the team members Carmichael nd References
