Policy Issues Acahia Phillips CIA314 April 22 2013 Paula Rutkowski The policy issues that seem to be a major concern in the United States is about children being exposed to domestic violence in the home Each year an estimated 3 to 10 million children witness assaults against a parent by an intimate partner Straus 1992 Domestic violence is an act of violence or abuse against a person living in someone s household especially a member of one immediate family A child is someone who is innocent and sees the world with innocent eyes they should never see the people that they love abuse each other The video I chose to watch was Child Exposure to Domestic Violence which is considered a personal crime The video went in to the homes of children who have witness first hand one of their parents being abused by the other The children do not understand what is going on and it is sad to hear them say My daddy said he would kill my mommy and then us Many times the parent who is being abused will put a restraining order on the other parent but this does not keep them away It is understandable that the mom loves the dad and they had a child together the dad needs to be in the life of that child But to what extreme is the mother going to keep him around Children do not understand things like this nor should they ever witness these things The child may grow up hating one or both of the parents they become afraid of the abuser What kinds of damage will seeing these things do to the child Children are being diagnosed with PTDS Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to seeing their parents fighting and being abused Their behavior changes after witnessing these events some children become more aggressive and violent while other become passive and scared Children who witness these events need to be taken to therapy in order to work out any issues and be able to talk about what they have been through Not only have children developed behavioral issues from being a witness to domestic violence but they also can suffer from sleeping and eating disorders as well as anxiety and depression In many cases parents who are violent with one another are at a higher risk to physically abuse their children Also when a child is exposed to this kind of behavior as they grow older they will display the things that they have seen they will more than likely become abusers themselves In order to prevent this from happening and to minimize the long term damage to the child children need to be placed into an environment where they can feel safe and secure Aside from a safe place the child needs to be surrounded by parents or primary caregivers who will show them love affection and all the support that they need to recover Over 3 million children are at risk of exposure to parental violence each year Carlson 1984 Children from homes where domestic violence occurs are physically or sexually abused andor seriously neglected at a rate 15 times the national average McKay 1994 Approximately 45 to 70 of battered women in shelters have reported the presence of child abuse in their home Meichenbaum 1994 About twothirds of abused children are being parented by battered women McKay 1994 Of the abused children they are three times more likely to have been abused by their fathers Domestic violence is something that should never happen especially in the presence of a child or children After researching and watching these videos it gives a whole new perspective to the subject I know it takes a lot to get yourself out of these kinds of situations I have seen it first hand with a friend of mine It is upsetting to know that these children who are supposed to see things in a very innocent light filled with love can only see red and hurt They are too young to witness such things that eventually lead to more problems in the future References Straus MA amp Gelles R 1990 Physical violence in American families New Brunswick NJ Transaction Publishers Carlson B E 1984 Children39s observations of interpersonal violence In A R Edwards Ed Battered women and their families pp 147167 New York Springer Meichenbaum D 1994 A clinical handbookpractical therapist manual for assessing and treating adults with posttraumatic stress disorder Ontario Canada Institute Press McKay M 1994 The link between domestic violence and child abuse Assessment and treatment considerations Child Welfare League of America 73 2939 Volpe J Sl996Effects of Domestic Violence on Children and Adolescents An Overview Retrieved from httpwwwaaetsorgarticle8htm
