Social Structure Theory Paper Acahia Phillips C A 3 14 Paula Rutkowski April 15 2013 Crime and what it means to us today in order to explain the meaning of crime and the role it plays in society we must first examine what crime is and what it means to us as individuals groups family units and everything in between When examining our social structure we must first consider what constitutes right from wrong We must try and answer the question is there really such a thing as an absolute right or wrong If so who decides what s right vs wrong and can anything we do or say against another be held against us In order to try and find the answers to these simple questions we must understand the essences of the term crime According to the dictionary crime is an act or action of a negligence nature that is deemed harmful or hurtful to the public be it voluntary or involuntary as in the case of a drunk driver hitting an innocent bystander could possible end in manslaughter charges being leveled against the drunk driver Because the drivers actions could have caused serious or even deadly consequences for the victim who was hit while standing on a corner crossing a street or on his way home from a long hard day s work even if the driver does not leave the scene of the incident because the action was negligence in nature and could have been detrimental to the victim this could be considered a crime Another example of wrongdoing or sinful actions would be that of a person committing a seemly harmless act against mankind such as exposing himself in public Although not harmful in a sense that would cause another party physical harm it is still considered a senseless and foolish or shameful act by which the public is engaged involuntary in witnessing the insulting or abusive nature of an seriously offensive person who s goal or aim was to transgress the rights of others moral principles by deliberately committing a reprehensible act in a public place Regrettable for all of us the world is filled with people from all walks of life who for one reason or another just don t seem to get it when it comes to why we have laws that in their mind go against what they think they should be able to do regardless of the outcome as long as it feels good to them it s not a matter of if the act is of an offensive hurtful or harmful nature to the perpetrator in their minds all that matters is what s good according to their belief according to their twisted idea of a thoughtless social structure which when you think about it is life without structure Some of the greatest minds of all times have long sought to understand what makes up a strong reasonable and workable social structure Psychological sociological criminological behavioral specialist pastors boys girls and even moms and dads have all had theories on crime and how to fix every problem imaginable Once such mind was that of Emile Durkheim author of The Normal and the Pathological who said that crimes fall into many categories he believed that when a specific behavior becomes important enough in the public eye that it could or would be called a crime if the behavior or rule was violated He also believed that some theorists viewed society as becoming stagnant without as he put it crime being a necessary evil to keep that from happening Agreeing with Durkheim s theory was another fellow by the name of Robert K Merton who believed that there were two different elements that help make up our social structure Merton like many others of today believed that the most important goal in everyone s life is money the dream of chasing for the most part the every elusive and uncatchable train of materialism and SUCCCSS Perhaps one of the saddest but honest things he believed is that in our society some of our most important establishments including family school and religion are all part of the reason our young children are catapult into believing whole heartedly in the American Dream Unfortunately for many of us today both Durkheim and Merton were spot on with their theories as more and more mature minded intelligent well educated people are buying into the lie behind the truth Wealth like life is a blessing full of wonders but wealth without reason understanding and meaning is like education without common sense Social structure is what we make it out to be just as a good thing can be made bad and so can a bad thing be made good perhaps we as a people need to rethink what is important to us and our children The makeup of any social structure depends primarily on what and how we as reasonable minded people allow actions of various types to take place within our society Many of us for example take for granted the right to vote whereby allowing our government to be overrun with crooks of the highest nature Take for example the movie industry like in the video we find a young man who because of his surrounding ended up on the wrong side of the law and suffered unnecessarily at the hands of those who without a doubt at one point or another called themselves friends Our video depicts the life of a young boy who like many young boys and girls of today grow up grew up without an active parent or role model in their lives Here we have two young men whose father was not around a mother that died of a drug overdose and grandparents who were unable to properly care for them properly Although everything seemed normal in the beginning it was far from it as the boys were exposed to a life of crime at such an early age The lack of supervision ability to actively get involved in the children s lives the inability to take control of the situation from the start and maintain control throughout the list go on and on there are as many reasons why these boys lives were the way they were as there are sands on the beach but yet we as an educated society still can t seem to get it right Lucas started out just as most of our children today start out with less than half a chance he had few problems but yet no one was around to see the depth of problems he was facing an average kid making average grades but filled with questions that seemly for an 8 year old had no answers thus setting the stage for an otherwise well behaved and possibly gifted young mind to deteriorate into nothingness simply because society allowed it to be so To see a child go from a life of possibilities to a life of crime to see the hope and dreams of a young boy or girl get crushed because no one cares enough to take the steps necessary to make a difference to watch a wellmannered youngster become a monster a predator and to think that with all we do this could be your child my child our neighbor our friend makes this video that much more heartbreaking why Because we have the power to do so much better we have the power to vote into and out of office those people who oppose our moral values yet we stand by election after election and do nothing The election process has gotten to the point that as a voter were left with a choice of voting for the lesser of two evils Many voters feel that we re in a no win situation it s like voting for which poisonous snake you want to sleep with knowing that that either way you re going to get bitten and most likely you re going to die but yet you must chose one or the other the Rattlesnake or the Cottonmouth but then again there is one that appears to be so colorful that heshe might be different the Coral is such a beautiful creature multicolored it can t help but be fair and equal surely it wouldn t do to us what the others would to our society or would it This is but one example of why we need to wake up It s time for the America public to let our elected representatives know that we are tired of the lack of conservative representation on our behalf across government lines For far too long the American people have sit by and let society spiral down the drain as if there is no hope If all we have is to hope that one day we will elect some colorful snake in the grass who will magically provide all the answers that we re looking for or waiting to hear then we re fooling ourselves Hope is not now and never will be found in any man for the mind of man is as corrupt as the thoughts it holds within It s funny but many times I feel that animals have more sense than humans do In fact more often than not animals demonstrate more sense than we do Yet society continues to demonstrate their superiority over the animal kingdom by passes laws to allow television to air shows of an adult or mature nature that only a few years ago couldn t be seen except in the back of hole in the wall jukejoint usually frequented by low lives criminals Why is it that we must continue to allow ourselves to be governed by unrighteous people We can no more expect a thief not to steal then we can a liar not to lie if we can t expect a thief not to steal and a lair not to lie why do we keep electing government officials to do that which is righteous when they themselves are less than righteous the truth be told we as a people regardless of our religious faith or belief can no more expect an unrighteous person to do that which is righteous no more than we can expect an ungodly man to do that which is godly It just can t and won t happen Human nature is as corrupt as is the nature of the snake it is wild at heart and can and will not be tamed Try as you may it is an impossible task to tame such an animal and yes I am equating the nature of man to that of the snake for just as a snake will forever be a snake so will man forever be man full of aws and faults that for reasons unknown tend to kick in at the most inopportune time usually when we least expect it A man marries a woman he s known for years only to find out after they are married that she is a man she was born a man and will die a man although he she may have gone through reconstructive surgery to make hisher body look like a girl she is inwardly still a man She can t produce a child through natural child birth nor will heshe ever be able too Yet society wants us to embrace this kind of thinking so that we don t offend anyone This is not about have anything against anyone it s not about gay or lesbian rights it s not about being politically correct which by the way played directly into the hearts and minds of Americans to feel and think that we re doing something wrong if we don t allow people to be themselves while the truth is we re not stopping anyone from being who or what they want to be we re just asking that everyone stops and thinks for a moment Think of where we ve come from to where we are today no one has to convince you one way or another if you simply look at how our children were raised then vs how they are raised today We are being forced in many ways to educate our children to believe in things that we ourselves don t believe in We are told what they can and can t eat in school we re told to let them be themselves while selfexpression is at the heart of our problem Selfexpression without guidance is not self eXpression but lawlessness waiting to happen Enough is enough it s time we take back the America of old an America in which we saw our children grow up respecting their elders respect for other nature and one another Society without reason is not a society it is an open pit of foul smelling human waste that no one wants to be a part of or party too We can do better but it s going to cost all of us perhaps much more than any of us wants to pay why not let s give the ways of old a try forget about being politically correct and simply do that which is ethically and morally right in the site of God and Man References Durkheim Emile 1895 The Normal and the Pathological The Rules of Sociological Method Merton Robert K 1938 Social Structure and Anomie American Sociological Review 3672 282
